To answer some of your points:
Yes, the postnatal depression is a concern. I have spoken to my doctor already about this and he believes it can be managed if it does occur, as it wasn't previously. Some of the additional contributing factors to this was the fact we moved country, moved in with my parents, both changed jobs, bought a house, and I also went back to college part time, all before my son was six months old. Ridiculous in hindsight, but it was all done for the right reasons.
We are much more settled now and both in good jobs.
I wouldn't be looking to go bankrupt or return the keys of the house to my mortgage lender. I don't personally agree with it and believe we have to just make the best of the situation.
We are going to continue to overpay on the mortgage as some others have suggested and hopefully this will help us get out of negative equity much sooner.
I am going to have a good chat with my husband about it tonight and we can form a better plan.
