    Spring
Spring in Shanghai is from March to May. This is the best season in a year for traveling. Spring flowers in bloom make the city lively and attractive. The temperature is comfortable around 20 C (68 F). Light rain happens however will not disturb your trip. Long-sleeved shirts, thin sweaters or coats are suitable for this time.

If you prefer Beijing to Shanghai
    Spring
To visit this city in spring (early April till end of May) you need to bring lightweight clothing: long-sleeved shirts or T-shirts, plus one or two jackets and sweaters. It is warm, windy and dry but temperature varies sharply between the day and the night. Dress warmly when going out at night. Also guard yourselves against sandstorms with outdoors wind gear.

FunTime (or anybody who recognises it): Which site are you using to find those journeys and ticket prices?

I did drop into a travel agent today. They did a quick search and said that they'd be able to do £840 per person.

it looks like momondo to me

when the searches complete, you'll be preseneted with a host of sites where you can purchase the flights from (including some airlines direct). Before you book with one of 3rd party sites that it links directly to, do some independant research for the quality of service that the sites offer -- from my own momondo searches, some of the links are 100%, 24 carat, 5* companies, whereas others are covered in bruises from where they've been beaten with bargepoles.

Another good site to do some (semi) flexible flight searching on is google flights.
(again, just cast you're eye over where your being linked to when the results come through to make sure you're not going to shonkyshystersrus.com)

Yes, I'm aware of the concept of bad travel companies. I'll check reviews.

I've played around on momondo, and it seems the key is to go through Shanghai. Trying to stop in Dubai makes the cost huge, while Shanghai gives me a very cheap option. But, only for China Eastern and China Southern airlines give me cheap prices - others are several times the cost. I'll go back and revise the reviews linked to before. However, I did see some scary things there. Shanghai is GMT + 8 which isn't too close to NZ, just.

I'll look into ITA search. At the moment, it isn't giving me good prices. But, I presume that I have to learn how to use it more.
