In most..not all....car hire can be far cheaper in resort....but as suggested check them out fully.......Also Google Palma Airport to Cala D'or bus.

This is simply not true, even according to your figures 25€ per day equates to 350€ over two weeks and they still need to take a bus back to the airport.

Maybe not that simple, in that there would indeed be an invoice for the 950 Euro deposit - I would need to sign up for that when I take the car. If there's a dispute over getting it back, even when I've done no damage to the car (which several people have reported over at TripAdvisor) it becomes a potentially long drawn out case. Obviously I'll take before/after photos, but if the rental company behave as others have experienced it may not reduce the hassle factor much.

So it seems I have 3 choices:
    (a) Risk it with a cut-price operator like RecordGo or GoldCar
    (b) Pay treble the price for a pukka operator like Europcar, Avis, etc.
    (c) Use a taxi service - £140 round trip from/to the airport, plus any other journeys by taxi.

I can't really justify the cost of option (b), as it's unlikely to be less than 350 Euros, so it looks like I'll need to think very carefully about how much hassle I'm prepared to put up with if I have the same experience as many others.

If it helps your sums, a pre-booked taxi transfer is €110 to Cala D'Or and back, a taxi off the rank is €70 each way

Vanrell have Fiat Pandas for €266 all in for 2 weeks starting Monday
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Vanrell's seems a good option for those of a nervous disposition. :) Though perhaps worth paying the few Euros more for a bigger car.

Be careful with this. Make sure that any car you rent there has full insurance for everything with no excess, on anything. Because you probably will not have purchased car hire excess insurance beforehand.

I've already purchased excess & CDW insurance for the trip, but am currently thinking about cancelling both that and the rental.

Have you actually booked anything in order to be able to cancel it?
It's car hire excess insurance. CDW is possibly for Australia, the Caribbean and in some cases, the USA.

    No, you are overcomplicating it.
Let's say they ringfence the 950€ and then steal your deposit without providing you with any kind of invoice. There is no need for a drawn out case. You simply open a dispute with your CC provider. They will immediately freeze the payment on your bill. In other words you will not be required to pay that part of your CC bill.
No need to waste time and energy with the car hire company at all.

Unless the car hire company can show an invoice for the damage, your CC company will be going after them. None of this will affect you.
If the car hire company do subsequently come up with an invoice and you are required to pay, you can then submit that to your insurance company.

Remember, all of this is currently only in your imagination. It hasn't actually happened. It just pays to be prepared. Don't panic. Don't stress. Take it in your stride.

But if you don't really need a car, don't bother.

You haven't understood my explanation. The 950 Euros is being CHARGED at the time the vehicle is collected, not simply ringfenced. This is confirmed by some of the angry former customers at TripAdvisors. Hence it is being fully authorised and invoiced at the point of sale.

This is also confirmed in their T&C's, which state that "the excess fee (950 Euros) will be charged to your credit card when you pick up the vehicle".

Yes, as per my previous post, I have already booked excess and CDW insurance with InsureFor. This can be cancelled if necessary.

No. It's just CDW EXCESS WAIVER INSURANCE.

and once again, it matters not if they take the money. What matters is that they need to present a legitimate reason for a deduction on the refund. So if they claim £150 for a scratch, they need to give you written documentation for that. if they do not, raise a dispute with your CC provider and they will refund the part not refunded.
They do this as they are jointly liable. In other words, if there is no evidence of a service being provided, they cannot charge you for that service.

My CC provider refunded me immediately when Expedia withheld £10 of my refund, claiming a booking fee, when none was indicated within the original booking. I did not contact Expedia about it at all.

I am in no way recommending RecordGo, as I've not even used them. my advice is just to protect yourself best you can, by covering all bases, if you can't afford to pay £16.50 a day to Vanrells.

Remember that you don't need to keep the car for the whole time. You can rent for a few days with Vanrells and then hand the car back.. If you have to take it back to the airport, you can get a bus back to your place. much easier without luggage.
Then you can rent a car as and when.
It seems that you are too stressed out by the RecordGo thing, so don't do it.

To clarify: the Policy Type is "Collision Damage Waiver", and the first section of cover says: "covers You for any physical loss or damage to the Hire Vehicle for which You are responsible for under the terms of the Hire Agreement following a Fire, Lightning Strike, Explosion, Accident, Accidental Damage,Theft or Attempted Theft, Malicious Damage, Storm and Flood".

My whole issue is not the theory of what RecordGo "should" or "need to" do, but the practicalities of dealing with what they actually do according to former customers - e.g. inventing vehicle damage to justify retention of the excess, or charging customers' credit cards without explanation/warning long after the customer has departed. It's not the rights and wrongs of the situation, just the hassle and stress of rectifying it later.

As you say, I'm better off forgetting RecordGo. I'm leaning towards taking Moto2's suggestion of a 110 Euro round trip taxi ride for the airport, and using local taxis or rental in Cala D'Or if required.

Brilliant - thanks. Have you used them before? Is it a driver with a name board at Arrivals?
