Microsoft should be totally ashamed - W10 uninvited massive 2 hour update is CR#P

Why would I want to go back if I can see a way forward?
A system restore would have been a breeze and fixed your issue with a few clicks.Those who know what backups and restore points are about are like you and me. They aren't really for 'normal users' to try,
Times have changed. "Normal" users should really have a handle on simple tasks like thisWould a restore take another 2 hours and would it be 100% successful?And how anyway would I then stop W10 Home Edition trying to upgrade me again at the next startup?Are you advocating it for normal users?
Yes, i think the definition of a normal user has changed somewhat since the days of windows 3.1
Using system restore is very simple and every normal user who is capable of opening a browser and using the internet, or following a simple set of prompts, should be able to do this.0 -
Smug Mode, using Opensuse.
Seriously though, MS have set themselves a rather lofty challenge with W10 as a rolling release with constant new features and changes. It isn't going to end well and I'll happily lay a bet they will be forced to do some back pedalling in the future over too much code change as QC is suffering. The constant barrage of [strike]service packs[/strike] feature updates is going to have to slow down for the sake of stability.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

I strongly suggest you check what you advocate before you make light of what actually is not at all straightforward.
If you type "restore" into "search windows" you won't get very far.
If you start typing system then if you are atune to Insider Americanised jargon, you might spot an opportunity to "Go Back to an earlier Build" and decode that as the way to go.
You might then decide to click on "Get Started" (on going back to an earlier build).
But you will then be quizzed on why and then asked to Check for Updates before you do anything more drastic ... as I write this, my PC has been checking for updates for a full five minutes and has just finished ... there's a bunch of Office updates but they wouldnt have helped me, would they?
It hasn't offered a way back, so now I need to go back via the front door and Go back to an earlier build again, and give my reasons again but this time ignore the urge to Check Updates!
Two clicks did you say? We wish!
OK so I have skipped checking updates and now it warns me as follows:
What you need to know
This might take a while {Microsoft's latest buzzphrase}, and you won't be able to use the PC until it's finished {yep we know that kinda deal from yesterday morning}. Leave your PC plugged in and turned on {yep ... turned on might be good}
After going back:
You'll have to re-install some Apps and Programs {erm ... wasn't that what I did anyway in the end?}
You'll lose any changes made to settings after installing the latest build {I could have lived with that!}
Are you files backed up? This shouldn't affect them but it is best to be prepared {for anything!}
Then if you dare click Next:
there's a Don't get Locked Out warning
And then if you click Next again, there's a thanks for trying this build, we'll automatically install a preview build when the next build is available {Oh great - can't wait - here we go again?}
I stopped there because it looked like I might experience a 90 minute wait and untold uncertainty if I did :rotfl:
So AndyPix, how many clicks and how many minutes of breeze were you forecasting again?0 -
with my broad skill set .
Right click start
click control panel
click recovery
click open system restore
click next, choose your restore point and click finishSo AndyPix, how many clicks and how many minutes of breeze were you forecasting again?
Around 6 clicks and lots of breeze0 -
Want a tissue, OP? Maybe its time to put the PC back in the box and send it back to PC world. Don't think technology is your thing.0

So the Classic XP type interface lives on under the Right Click... so you don't enjoy all those new "this may take a while" alternative interfaces either? :rotfl:
Should we Scan for Affected Apps and Programs or just breeze right on, do you think?
It still warns that some programs might not work correctly and need to be reinstalled, and mysteriously, it only offers one restore point after a whole year of W10 - explain that? How can I be sure that it is taking me back to pre-Redstone 1? The restore point just says it was a Critical Update sometime yesterday afternoon which looks like a time sometime later than when W10 Anniversary Update finished - doesn't give details. Could have been a minor critical update subsequent to Redstone 1!
JDUK - don't be a silly-billy. Technology has been my thing for nearly 55 years since I got a How What Why book for Christmas! I have spawned kids who are accomplished STEM graduates as well as being well balanced people who get out a bit from behind their screens! Currently they are in two different countries from the one their grandparents (who bought me the book) sit in right now. One dumped his PC for a Mac which runs his CAD and simulation programs better. Their grandparents marvel at what we do, but very sadly are unable to get the best out of smartphones, smart tvs, tablets and PCs because they are too complicated and every time they are turned on, they do something unexpected which dents their confidence - usually an unexpected update that needs attention. I am sitting in a fourth country but the door is open and the sunshine beckons!
Do I feel lucky, punk? With a single system restore point on offer? No I don't! With the sun beckoning - Yes I do!0 -
Oh, yes, quite neat actually!

There is a check box to "show more restore points" - Pick a date that was before the update0

So are we over the hump now? Have most W10 users suffered the update already? Clearly it has been some kind of gradual roll out round the world. Are most W10 Anniversary Update upsets still ahead of us, or as some of you like Rum Rat have dared to suggest (without much to back it up I think
), most people been there and done it and suffered no problems at all?
Your posts have been a continual insult to anyone who you think is below your special skills.
You really have no idea about how many installs of W10 and the update there are...Do you?
It's obvious that the majority didn't experience any problems. I've updated more PC's than you have without any problems. You don't seem to have any answer to those facts other than more self puff.
All you seem to be proving is that you shouldn't be let lose with a PC......Using one for years does not necessarily convey superior knowledge.
So carry on with your supercilious rantings, but don't believe your own hype, it's not good....;):DDrinking Rum before 10am makes you
