You are being disingenuous here; you pay £12 per month for limited home broadband.

You might. Many of us do not. Us older members of society are not constantly downloading pirate movies, and even if we were ... you can watch several a month on a 40GB allowance if you are canny :p

I rarely use more than a GB a day on average. Actually I use a screen busted HTC One as my Hotspot! Gets a bit warm sometimes, but works great for all my WiFi needs. My laptop, Chromecast plugged in to whichever telly I want it (living room or bedroom) - visiting friends and rellies - who else pays only £12pm for their home broadband?

I pay £10 a month for sky fibre unlimited.

The "set connection as metered connection" option is there alright in Network Settings, and I have seen it before and I thought I was using it. However I've found it now as "Off", so I have put it On now (for what good it might do me after the event!), but thanks for the reminder.

Are you sure the recent Anniversary Update installed?

Metered connection option should now be found in network properties not in Settings.

Updated two more machines today (that's six in total) without any problems and no files lost.
Which has been the experience of the vast majority of users. Obviously some have experienced difficulties, but, that has always been so with any updates, especially major ones.

Is that without taking any other Sky services?

    OP, I'm curious...
    • If the update screwed your system up so badly and wasted so much of your valuable time, why not just restore from a backup? Then you could wait til it's more stable, or look for issues in the system that might cause this to go so wrong before trying again.
    • Why still use Windows Live Mail? W10 has a really good mail app built in, seems weird to keep using something outdated in preference to something the system already has... I believe Hotmail works in the modern app, but don't quote me on this as I stopped using mine years ago.
    • Did you try re-registering the apparently missing DLLs before risking your system by downloading an unknown system file from the internet? What about scanning with the System File Checker?

Windows Update Settings > Advanced Options > Defer upgrades.
This stops the Anniversary Update but, importantly, doesn't prevent those much-needed security patches...
ETA: It's just been pointed out to me on another thread that the Defer updates options is not available if you have Windows 10 Home Edition.. Apologies for any potential confusion caused...

No need to be curious. My decision-making (and I was forced to make several decisions 'on the fly' earlier today) was quite logical throughout.

Are you trying to be a bit clever with your questions? I think you are. Nothing in what you have questioned is particularly useful to normal users is it - except your warning that obtaining files from the internet can be dodgy - oh yeah - where did that Anniversary Update come from again - t'bloody internet! Some flaw in my system let it in so it surprised me in my own living room first thing this morning after I woke up my Asus from Standby, eh?

There were no issues in my system causing this to go so wrong. All the issues are plain to see in Microsoft's lazy and rushed implementation on my machine without forewarning me in any way - at least not in any way like most W7 users were largely given several conspicuous stages of choice with whether to upgrade to W10, or leave it a bit longer. Although that wasn't every W7 user's experience either, was it? :p

This Anniversary Update was in fact an almost complete new operating system from what I can infer from the time it took to flippin' install itself, and the number of restarts it gave itself. One dialog box was memorable. The text of the dialog message was something like "Windows is updating Asus Touchpad and Mouse and has disabled your keyboard - do not turn off PC - this may take a while." ... and the funny part - perhaps only appreciate by those with some programming bent? There was an OK button on the flippin' dialog box :rotfl: At that stage I watched it for around 5 minutes, becoming more and more incredulous that it would ever find a way through the update, as it seemed to have frozen, and then I decided it was best for my constitution to give up watching - I went to watch the espresso machine instead to make another coffee - when I came back, that particular stupid little Catch22 had thankfully disappeared!

It seems also to me to have been the slowest update of OS on any machine I have been associated with in my entire history as a Microsoft user.

And to suggest a roll back to a previous version - well - I fancied there would be more to be found on Google about how to fix a poor implementation of a step recommended as progress by Microsoft, rather than how to fix a failed roll back (a backward step?) ... logical when you think about it ;)

This option exists in Windows 10 Pro, and some other versions, but not Windows 10 Home, which a lot of people will have.

Not trying to be clever, I'm genuinely curious. And I'm not offering general help to normal users, I'm replying to your forum post, asking specific questions about your experience, out of curiosity. Given your claimed skill level, I'm genuinely confused about your approach here which is why I'm asking what I'm asking.

I didn't suggest a roll-back, I suggested restoring your system from a backup to the state it was in before the trouble you've had (I've made an assumption here that you have backups based on your comments regarding experience and skill, apologies if I've got this wrong..)

Given my own experience, I'm inclined to think there must have been something wrong with your system, or something happened to the download during the update to cause the issues. Or something on your system stopped it from working properly. I've seen antivirus programs block the free W10 upgrade on numerous occasions, so I tend to look for these things if it goes wrong.

Yes, the Anniversary Update came from the internet, but there's a difference between trusting Microsoft with your Windows system files, and trusting "some other website found on Google" with your Windows system files.

Anniversary Update isn't so much a "new OS", as a major upgrade, hence my further comment about changing the setting to defer upgrades if you don't want it for any reason.

My question about the mail app is also just simple curiosity. I've found the new app to be so much better than Live Mail, but that's just my own opinion. I'd love to hear your views from the other side ;)
