;)The anniversary update caused no problems on the four machines I updated.
Maybe a Linux thread would be a good idea....Save hijacking every W10 thread....??

How the !!!! do Microsoft see this as acceptable? No warning?
    No warning?

    There's lots of warning...

Meanwhile my old laptop, on Linux Mint, is operating at home as a download server and general dogsbody. I fully expect it to run without supervision for the next month. I could never leave a Windows machine to look after itself for so long.

You have a download server running a Linux distro, yet you don't have the knowledge to be able to install an update that resolves bugs, adds features and makes it more secure?

    Hmm, okay!

    Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
I have my W10 laptop with me on holiday and live in dread of it deciding to do the anniversary update while I'm on a slow connection and unequipped to take the necessary precautions (backup, etc).
Go into Network Settings, select Advanced Options, and use the option to "set this connection as metered'.

I have to disagree, the W10 update just appeared today with no prior advice that it was going to be a major change that would have some adverse impact on my setup. It wasn't a significant problem for me to resolve, but I can imagine plenty of people will be rather confused by what happens.

Linux Mint is a much better operating system than Windows. Easy and stable. Gets the job done.
Live on the edge Fedora is the way forward

  • It's free what is the problem
Free or not, it should not be forced onto people, especially when devious and dubious methods are used.

Just turn off the Auto-Updates. Oh yeah just remembered, it's not an option on the 'free' W10.
I don't like morning people. Or mornings. Or people.

Happily the OP has solved his problem without Linux........

I like Aspalls also but when I need a drink I enjoy my Rum.

Win10 is basically MS trying to make people use their PCs the way MS wants them to and because it was "free", they pretty much do what they like.

It should be removing files though, it might change some settings and default programs, but it shouldn't be deleting stuff.

Chap I work with allowed his laptop to update to Win10, sometime last week he was working on a really important project, lot's of CAD work, he left his desk to get a cup of tea, came back to find Win10 updating itself, he lost several hours worth of work.
But this isn't unique to Win10, Win7 does this too, unless you tweek some group policy settings.
