If you want to tip please ask if your tips go to the workers or if the company take them.
Some places only give cash tips to workers and card tips are kept by the company.
Some places divide your tip between all the staff on duty that day/night.

I do this and in Byron they don't get it, so leave it in cash.

I think in some restaurants cash tips are kept by the staff and then credit card are split according to some sort of calculation so that the chefs and back office staff are able to share the tips.

In London a lot of places add 12.5% service charge. I love it when i have received poor service or waited 15 minutes for the waiter to bring a class of wine. While I watch others arrive after me and end up receiving their drink before me.

Then they present the bill and of course I say remove the service charge, as usual they ask why. I explain.....oh so sorry sir here is a voucher/money off your bill so sorry.

happened at a restaurant in Windsor and I ended up having a round ( 2 drinks for free :) )

It depends on the restaurant, if the service and the foods really satisfied me, then I'll be happy to give a tip. But if not, i will just turn my back without looking back :p - of course after paying my bill.

To me its more the overall cost than a tip being factored in, why pay £10 for a meal if a tip is expected when I can pay £11 for a meal somewhere else where its not expected the whole point of going to the £10 place is its cheaper.

I don't mind service charge added if its already in the cost i.e im paying £10 for a 3 course meal as I already think I have got a bargain.

If however that 3 course meal was £8.50 and I was expected to top it up to £10 by tips I wouldnt be happy.

I do tip in family/local restaurants but not much normally just small change I have available and because I am somewhat of a regular.

Theres a take away that me and friend go to sometimes, when they deliver the driver never gives you back any change, if its a £9 order and you hand them £10 they walk off with the change, if its £19 and you hand them £20 its the same which wouldn't be a problem but they already charged £2.50 delivery for a mile!

Thats the other point, if somewhere gave free delivery I would give a small tip to cover delivery, if I am being charged £2/£3 etc especially for a short distance then its taking the mickey to expect a tip.
  • I used to and sometimes still do if I've had a couple drinks and round up to the nearest ten.

Back when we paid in cash more so it was easier as I'd just give to the nearest ten pounds. Nowadays on card, I mostly don;t give a tip and 50% of the restaurants I've found don;t even have the option to add a gratitude. To me, like others have said, they get a wage and don't need tips. You don't tip the nurse when they make you better, so why tip someone that carries a plate from the chef to your table?

The US is different though as I believe they don't get much of a wage so naturally I will tip around 18-22%.

The tip I give is the repeat visit to somewhere I like.

I think the cost of the food is exactly that. If the server adds something to your experience (and, in my view, they can make or break it) then they should be rewarded.

They are rewarded, - they get a wage.

And it should be a decent one which is reflective of their work and skills.
Not dependent on a primitive system that shouldn’t form part of modern employment.
