Turning off Contactless

in Credit cards
Today another customer grabbed my purse off the counter and paid for their purchases with my credit card. I then had a long wait while a supervisor was found to refund my card. I've never used contactless and am a bit shocked as to how easy it was for some random person to use my card. I rang MBNA (the card provider) but they have refused to remove the contactless facility from my card.
1. Am I able to compel them to do this?
2. Are there credit cards about that don't do contactless payments?

It can't be turned off per se, as it is a builtin feature of the card you have. Since the whole point of contactless is that there is no interaction with the bank at the point of sale, there is nothing that MBNA could do to stop the current card being used for contactless payment. All you can do is get a non-contactless card or be more vigilant in future.0

Again? I doubt this one even happened. Your trying to tell us that some one grabbed your purse and took a chance you had a contactless card in there and put it over the machine.
For this to happen once is unlikely but possible I suppose but for it to happen to you again, I smell a rat.0 -

The kind of person willing to do this in the past might have looked over people's shoulders to observe a PIN before grabbing a card and stealing much more. This is one of the advantages of contactless - it reduces the risk of PINs being obtained by observation or compromised equipment - albeit at the expense of up to £30 of transactions going through in the event a card is lost/stolen or "grabbed".
You are not liable for transactions you did not authorise, though I accept a ballyhoo is always inconvenient - whether with the merchant or the CC.they have refused to remove the contactless facility from my card.
1. Am I able to compel them to do this?
No you can't. They can offer cards on whatever basis they choose and you are free to decline a card. There might be an exception on disability grounds if for some reason contactless could be discriminatory.2. Are there credit cards about that don't do contactless payments?
Already answered. But all mine are now contactless, so just because you get a non-contactless card now, doesn't mean it won't become contactless on renewal.
Personally I'd prefer to have a choice of contactless/non-contactless. You can drill bits out of your card to kill the feature.0 -
Are you saying they just grabbed your purse, and swiped it across the terminal, or that they removed the card from your purse and used it?
If the former, then you could use one of these to prevent it.https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D36R6BE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Believe it or not, there are still a large number of major retailers who do not accept contactless payments as they are too afraid of fruadsters stealing customers cards and making small purchases to risk it.Never Knowingly Understood.

If this happens to you frequently (it never happened to me), you might want to try another strategy: do not plonk your purse onto the counter and never leave it out of sight. Also be more selective in the shops you attend, I can't see it happen in Waitrose.
Anyhow there is always a silver lining: in the old days, the person would have walked-off with the purse and you would have lost all your cards and on top of it, all your cash as well.

Really? The shop assistant would have seen this happen, -did they let the other customer take their purchases? Why didn't they call security/the police?
What was your purse doing on the counter anyway? Shouldn't it have been in your hand?
Your story is a very unlikely load of old bull.0 -

Which major retailers are they?
Can you explain why the retailers should be afraid of fraudsters stealing customers' cards?
What negative impact would it have on the retailers?
Here are some major retailers:

So are you saying they grabbed your purse, paid with your card, picked up the goods and then ran off?
Why didn't they just pick up the goods and run off?
(Why did they make the theft more complicated by involving your purse and card?)0
