I have wondered how contactless security works with TFL

With each touch, the card details are simply stored and forwarded to the database. There can be a delay before this happens. At the end of the day, the ins and outs are reconciled.

When an inspector boards a train, and "checks" your contactless card, they can't even tell if you have touched in. All they can check is that it's a valid card and not on a blacklist. The inspection is noted. During the reconcilation process, they can work out if you were "in" or "out" of the system. I don't suppose they bother to do anything unless the same card keeps cropping up.

I suppose (again) that cards go onto a blacklist if TfL experience chargeback problems.

I have my unwanted contactless card in a shielded wallet. I insist on NOT using contactless at the tills, preferring to insert my pin for any transactions and replace the card back into the shielded wallet. So far I have had no issues using my card this way.

Given indeed your card is contactless, how are you better off typing in your PIN (where a compromised machine could capture it or you could be overseen) rather than simply touching it on the reader?

To re-iterate. So far I have had no issues using my card this way. I guess I am not daft enough to use my card when someone is hanging over my shoulder. ;)

I use my contactless card quite frequently, and I've never yet been asked to enter my pin. I'm interesred to hear this does actually happen!

It will only ask for your pin if you only use it for contactless or it is used in an unusual pattern. If you use it for pin transactions in between contactless payments or at a cash point then they already know it's you using it.

I don't understand why people are so resistant to new technology. It's a faster payment method and refusing to use it when you have it on your card is pointless. It's also more secure than pin transactions. Your bank will immediately refund any contactless fraud as opposed to fraudulent pin transactions which will cause them to ask you a lot more questions!.

I'm surprised you use a debit card at all, why not simply insist on writing out a cheque each time you want to pay for something :rotfl:

    Well, to re-iterate my question!

    Or is it a protest?

It's a serious question, I'm curious to know..

Believe it or not, there are still a large number of major retailers who do not accept contactless payments as they are too afraid of fruadsters stealing customers cards and making small purchases to risk it.

Really, it's more likely that it's more of a logistical nightmare for major retailers to change their systems all at once, for example, some Tescos have contactless payments, some don't which suggests that contactless machines are installed in new stores or when stores are having a refit/new tills also, our local Sainsbury's doesn't have contactless, however it's coming soon according to friends I have that work there.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

I got a new CC from my bank, the first time I used it it declined the transaction twice in Tesco and I had to use a PIN, after that I have had no issues with limited use (on the tube). My bank debit card was issued contactless from the off, I went to a hole in the wall, changed the PIN and since then have never been asked to do it outside of once in a BM foods place near work that I have never shopped in before

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I have my wanted contactless card in a unshielded wallet. I insist on using contactless at the tills, preferring not to insert my pin for any transactions and replace the card back into the unshielded wallet. So far I have had no issues using my card this way.
