What would you spend on an engagement ring?

Cost really shouldn't come into the equation ! Does she like it is all that matters. I went with my fiance to chose a ring and couldn't bear the thought of spending potential house deposit money on just a ring.
Luckily, I spotted a second hand one which I loved - didn't cost a fortune and we saved the VAT. RESULT !!!
Exactly. It should matter how much the ring costs, as long as the wearer loves it. I can't stand ring snobs.0 -
I was offered but rejected an engagement ring, I don't really like them.
Our existing relationship rings were engraved and polished for the wedding.
I have been offered an eternity ring.0 -

It does if the wearer wants one that costs £10k and the buyer only has £1k!
Having a more valuable ring doesn't necessarily make you a snob - it just means you have more money to spend.0 -

Of course, but if the wearer wants one for 10k but the buyer can only afford 1k, then the wearer is horribly materialistic and greedy IMO. What is the buyer meant to do? Most people can't afford anywhere near that amount. If a person can afford it and wants to spend that much then that's great, but if they can't, then it's not their problem, but the wearers.0 -

I would hazard a (reasonable) guess that most people are clueless as to how much a fair sized, good quality diamond ring costs.0 -

That kind of attitude would be a deal breaker for me. Imagine trying to setup a life with someone like that, would do my head in.0 -
Or not! Got engaged in'91 & chose a beautiful light sapphire & diamonds for £1k. Dumped him 6mths later upon learning I was fianc!e No.7!!!! He had a house on the Thames & had chucked all previous rings in ( would love to dredge the river in Marlow...) I kept mine & still wear it because it's gorgeous! My now-husband bought me a simple aquamarine for less than £300 a few years later, I have treasured it for 25yrs. It's not the cost, just what you love! By the way, for our 25th Anniversary, he surprised me with a beautiful diamond eternity ring, inherited from his late mother. I wear them side by side with pride & joy0

Mine cost £30 in 1971. It has a diamond, but was second hand from a jewellers, as you didn't pay the then, jewellery tax on used goods. It's equivalent new, in the same shop was much more expensive, but I can't remember the comparison.
Unfortunately, due to aging causing fingers (rather joints) to become wider it no longer fits, but my wedding ring does, with borrowing my husbands when mine is too tight.
Our wedding rings, both heavy 22 carat yellow gold , were cheap, too. They were new, but the jeweller had a closing down sale. They cost £20 each and were valued at £200, a few years ago.
I was offered a ruby ring for our 40th, but I couldn't justify the cost for something I would seldom wear.0
