What would you spend on an engagement ring?

Diamonds are just De Beer's ploy to earn money. They also stockpiled their diamonds, restricted supply and upped the price of diamonds.
In reality, a lot of other gems are prettier than diamonds.
Anyway, that said, my hubby wanted to buy a diamond ring and I told him always that there's no point buying 1 carat+ as the price jump is crazy so he bought me a ring just under a carat and saved lots of money in doing so! No-one could tell the difference anyway!0 -
It could have been a ring out of a cracker for all i would have cared.
It wasnt, but it didnt cost the earth either.
Women that have unrealistic demands on a ring will always have unrealistic demands in marriage.

Freakonomics did a good podcast on this subject (basically it's cartel/rip-off). To see how good an "investment" a diamond is, buy one and try to sell it a week later - something detailed in the podcast.0

Buy pretty much anything this week and try to sell it a week later and you will make a loss. Buy a tv now for £1k and sell it in 10 years for zip, whereas a £1k ring will always still have a value. You don't buy an engagement ring as an "investment", it is a gift which is enjoyed for life.
Does your girlfriend/wife agree with my view or yours?

I guess it depends how well off you are! My engagement ring cost £1000, which probably was about a month salary for my partner. It is platinum with a small but good quality diamond and a pretty design to the band and I love it. I actually don't really like rings with huge masses of diamonds very much, but then I have small hands and don't think it'd suit me.Trying to lose weight (13.5lb to go)0

I have never been engaged but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable wearing a ring that cost more than a grand.0

Waste of money myself, money best spent on something else for you both.0

About £250
TBH i wouldn't like the bf to spend that much, it seems excessive. I certainly wouldn't want him to spend a months wages on the bloody thing. Its only a ring (which i can't wear at work anyway!)This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I haven't got an engagement ring as I didn't want one. Waste of time and money in my view. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0

I have seen my dream engagement ring. It costs £20. Other half did say he would be embarrassed to propose with a £20 ring!!! I told him not to be silly and I would be scared to wear anything horrendously expensive for fear of losing or damaging it! At least with £20 he could buy 2 so I wouldn't have such fear.0
