Paid for app is now free 1 year later

I, along with several thousands more I suspect, paid £1.49 for a Fantasy Football app from "Premier League" for the 2015-2016 Barclays Premier League season. Recently I received an email from the developers announcing proudly that a new app is here and it is free. The existing app no longer connects to their service and is no longer listed in the app store. The new app has more features and so is not centered around the fantasy football game unlike the original app.
Is this legally allowed or should I be asking for my money back?

What an intriguing question you pose, goku.
May I enquire as to why you would possibly consider this not to be legal?
What if the app was not free this year, but was charged at £4.99?
Following your logic, would you in that instance have suggested you still owed £3.50 for last years app?
Just something for you to pomder over. However, I am not a lawyer and cannot give you legal advice; if you want that, may I suggest you seek independent legal advice of the issue.0 -

If you had bought a 2015/2016 season ticket to attend matches at the home stadium of your favourite football team, would you also expect that same ticket to allow you access during the 2016/2017 season?0 -
You should ask for a million pounds in compensation....geez this country!0

Many, many years ago I bought a TIME pc and was told that with the 6GB harddrive I would never need to buy another pc. To date I have had to buy a couple of laptops/PC's with a min 1TB harddrive for the things I do online.
Can I take that salesperson to court for not telling the truth as that pc cost over £200?? ;0)0 -
My original post alluded to the fact that I had bought the app just ahead of the 15/16 season. However, upon a closer look, the original app is indeed titled 15/16. I did assume that this app would simply continue for other seasons; as I didn't take the official title of the app into my assumption, I made this simple mistake.
@WhyNot?: The avenue I was hoping to explore was along the lines of something I had read a long time ago where if the same product is released by a manufacturer, the original purchasers are entitled to the newer version for free. I believe this only applies to the exact same model; hence I think that would explain why you have several iterations of phones etc.0 -
Nothing wrong with the country pal . I a pretty proud to be British. If you come from a different country , sod off back there if its so bad .
Be careful ... you might find yourself getting a yellow card; some posters have delicate sensibilities ... they can dish it out but they can't take it.0 -
