Paid for app is now free 1 year later

So it's not exactly the same app? It is a new and improved version? And it's free? I'd be annoyed if the old one stopped working AND was expected to pay for the new one, but the new one is free so there's nothing stopping you using it surely? You used the app that you paid for, for a year, so I'd say you got your money's worth. Some programs are licensed for a set amount of time, like Microsoft Word and anti-virus etc, and you don't get newer versions unless you are a paying customer.
For apps there are often free updates and upgrades of the original version. The company probaby decided hey'd make more money (from advertising or whatever) if they offered the app for free than if they charged a small amount for it. If it only generated a few thousand pounds in revenue, that's small fish compared to advertising revenues!
No harm in writing a letter to the company and converying your annoyance that the app you paid for no longer works and you want a refund instead of a free version. They might say no, or they might say yes, it's up to you how you spend your time.
this as bad as the OPs post
it was an app designed for one season, my son bought it last year and thought he may have to pay again this year, he is happy that it is free this year.

Agreed, you can then write to RM complaining about the cost of either a first or second class stamp and the time it takes to deliver as well:rotfl:0 -
@WhyNot?: The avenue I was hoping to explore was along the lines of something I had read a long time ago where if the same product is released by a manufacturer, the original purchasers are entitled to the newer version for free. I believe this only applies to the exact same model; hence I think that would explain why you have several iterations of phones etc.
It is free, happy days0
