Pulled over by police for speeding

So do some MOPs.
But safety has little to do with it.
It may have been safe - it may not have been - we don't know how much other traffic was about - but the government in it's wisdom has declared the max speed limit on any road in the UK is 70mph.
Even an empty 3 lane motorway in the early hours of the morning.
Safety is everything to do with it, drivers don't get trained to do more than 70mph (sometimes not even 60mph) and get no motorway driving training during the test, allowing people on out congested road network to do 90 or 100 with no experience will lead to untrained drivers going at speeds they can't handle due to bravado or claiming to have done advanced training. We have speed limits for the protection of the majority from the minority who would abuse a no limit roadSam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

You miss my point - safety has little or even nothing to do with it being a offence.
And some drivers DO get training for higher speeds than would be included in 'normal' driving training/instruction to pass the woefully inadequate test we have in this country which I agree with you does little to prepare a driver for speeds above 60mph.
I also agree that we have speed limits to protect the majority from the minority who would abuse a no limit road - but it's at the inconvenience of those (admittedly it's a small number) of safety conscious drivers who take the time, trouble, and cost to prepare themselves for a higher level of competence than the majority of people.
Any fool can exceed the speed limit - but even highly trained driver's do not have the freedom to make an educated decision on what speed is appropriate - one size - or speed - does not fit all.0 -
I hate people who speed. It's become socially acceptable (a radio DJ I was listening to was joking about his second speed awareness course the other day like it was just a minor inconvenience).
Every time someone speeds past me or swears at me and overtakes because I'm doing 20mph in a 20 zone, I just imagine one day the police catching-up with them. It's nice to hear that people do get caught and I hope the OP gets a ban. 98 is totally unnecessary.0 -
OP please tell us where you live, so we can avoid the area ...:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

What on earth were you doing that was so important that it was worth risking the lives and safety of other road users?
Who said he risked the life of safety of any other road user?
There is no charge of Dangerous Driving.
The A50 can be quite busy, but at times, it's traffic free.
Not condoning speeding generally, but you were not there, so can't say if Nuns and kittens and small children were at risk.
What was the unmarked car. I drive to Derby and Back (from liverpool) to work, and the standard of driving at peak times is amazingly bad. I saw some serious road rage last Monday which would have got both protagonists banned for a very long time. But it's okay, neither were speeding.0 -

I've been on a speed awareness course and did actually learn something, but one thing that worries me, is those people who drive at or below the speed limit, but have no anticipation, and haven't had their eyes tested (ever). Overtaking in 20 mph zone does seem very silly. How fast were you really going? 15 ? :rotfl:
I hope the OP does not get a ban.
Note it's not automatic. Guy Martin had 21 points and was not banned. :eek:0 -
quite likely that the reason the charge is set at 98mph is that if they had charged you at 100+ you would almost certainly face a ban.Maybe it's 98 because that was the speed he was recorded doing. Quite possibly you were clocked at 100+.Where have you got that from?
For some reason 100mph is the mythical figure where everything disintegrates.
OP you would be better placed to employ a solicitor rather than all the so called experts on here. You may be guilty but your brief( get a good specialist one) will look at the technicalities and challenge those. Is he denying speeding? What are you suggesting a not guilty or a Newton hearing?
It's not just the penalty you need worry about the impact on insurance is going to be a bigger hit.
Never admit guilt to your brief, but don't lie. He may struggle to defend you if you tell him "you done it".Having been recorded at 28 mph over the limit and his speedo likely reading over 100 what do you suggest he gives the brief to work with?
Let us know how you get on.
In about 1992 I was caught doing 53 in a 30. Heading out of town not built up. Was fined 3 points and £100. I was on a low wage(9k) at the time.
I pled guilty by letter;no brief.
On the same day the local MEP was caught 50 in 30 in a small local village 1st thing in the morning and again later that day on his way home. SO TWICE. He employed a solicitor to fight his case, it was then counted as ONE offence he was fined 3points and £30. The sherriff agreed it was one journey despite being caught 7 or 8 hours apart.
No cameras in those days real police.
You can make your own mind up if the legal system is fair or not.Different legal system to the one the OP is faced with then.
OP, other than consider speaking to a solicitor this isn't good advice.0 -
"Overtaking in 20 mph zone does seem very silly. How fast were you really going? 15 ? "
I would have been doing 20.
I live in the Buckinghamshire countryside and a lot of roads near me, although long and straight, go through villages, so the limit is 30-40mph. I get overtaken several times a day by people easily doing 50-60mph.
My biggest pet hate is people who do 40 in a 60 and then, as they enter a 30, just carry on at 40.
Probably the same people who hog the middle lane of the motorway.0 -
Send an apology letter that you are a football club manager and you have serious diarrhea and gastroenteritis.0

You've been caught twice driving at excessive speeds. I hope that you get a court summons. If you don't get a ban, for Heaven's sake slow down before you kill yourself and other innocent people. Do you know what happens to a car that crashes at 100 m/p/h?

I've been in a crash at 60 m/p/h, and I still can't believe I managed to walk away with a few bruises (neither could the police officer or the paramedic).0
