Its not the supermarket making the mistake as such but some ordinary worker .
If i had the problem the OP had then a nice polite letter to the supermarket manager would be what i would be doing .I would not be shocked and neither would i be plastering it all over the internet .

As to out of date all my antihistamines are a year or so old and done no harm in 50 odd years of taking them .
  • I wouldn't even write a letter.
Next time I was in a branch of Sainsbury, I would simply go to customer services with the tablets and receipt and I'm sure that I would get a full refund or exchange with no bother at all.

So we're now back to post number three already? :D

    Take them back.
I'm sure they'll either replace them with correctly dated stock or give you a full refund.

They'll probably do both, actually. Sainsburys are good like that ... or at least they are at my local store :)

Wow thrilled everyone assumes this is about compensation. Not the fact Sainsbury is selling medicine this far out of date. Would you be happy giving these to kids or your grandparents? It's surely more a case of safety and peace of mind. I wouldn't expect to buy medicine so far out of date from such a large supermarket and find it that extremelly worrying. Was more looking to find out the best place to report it. And to dispose of it I will be returning directly to the source for a refund and they can then find a way to dispose of them, let's hope it's not back in the stock rotation eh.

Massive over reaction. It really isn't that long, 6 months on a product that has a shelf life of years, and yes, I would still use it, and give it to my children and grandparents. It's tablets, it's not going to turn toxic because it's a few months older than the date on the box.

How many people check the dates of meds once they take them home and put them in their first aid box.

Take them, no need to report it to anyone, and next time buy generic ones from any supermarket for pence. I get ours in Aldi, i think they're about 90p per pack. They've probably been left on the shelf because most people realise paying for the branded ones is a rip off.

I've just checked my tablets that I bought in May 2016, I'm in Turkey now and have them in case I get bitten by Mossies. The expiry date is 05/18 so two years from purchase.

So effectively the item purchased at Sainsbury's has sat on the shelf (in a busy supermarket) for two years. I'm calling this thread out as BS. Op- it's time to see a photo of the reciept and offending item.

Why would anyone post lies on MSE?

Lets look at the evidence rather than make judgemental calls against fellow MSE'ers, eh?

The OP joined MSE way back in 2009.
Prior to this thread, their last post was in 2012, and so in those 3 years made just 4 posts.
We don't all post excessively on MSE, you know! Look at me!!!

And now they have come back to ask for help regarding this attrocious and shocking matter of Sainsburys selling out of date, over the counter, medical products.

I don't think you making judgemental accusations against the OP as posting Bull !!!!!! helps the OP at all, do you?

And someone with your experience of MSe knows all too well that newbies cannot post links (to photos etc), even if they were inclined to do so.

Disgusting behaviour by someone who really should know better! :(

You've quite clearly never worked in retail, or seen the state of the backrooms in some places :D
(I'd take a punt that they originally came in on promotion at some stage, then the promotion ended and the store was left with remainder stock. Distribution won't take this back, so it sits in the backroom until it either comes around again or gets stuffed out)

Absolutely believe this happened, but massive overreaction.

Take back for a refund, and they'll apologise profusely.
    Nothing more to be done.

Several people already mentioned that the drugs would have been perfectly safe for anyone to take. They are not poison and do not become so after a certain date. The worst that could have happened would be that they failed to do anything at all.

If you return these drugs to the store, explaining why, there is no way they will be put back on the shelf.

Anyway, your thread certainly instigated lots of responses...;)
