I'd go for Volvo or the Mercedes E Class0

From my opinion Mercedes E class would be wonderful car.0

I can only comment on the 3.0 V6 engine. 80k on that sort of engine..if looked after...is absolutely nothing and is only really getting going. That engine is around 250bhp, which can be remapped to around 310bhp.
To be honest the scary depreciation is in the first 3 years, which is when we purchased ours. 18 months ago it levelled off and has held pretty steady since then.
There's a lot more to a car than an engine.0 -
I had a BMW 5 series (e39) which I ran for maybe 10 years; late in life it did have a couple of expensive bits go, but there is also a booming 2nd hand parts market, so you don't have to buy new.Have £15k- £20k to spend on the next car. Aim is to buy reasonably new (up to 4 yrs old) and then keep for at least the next 10 yrs.
Key requirements – safety, reliability and space to carry 5, sizeable boot
Current thoughts
Volvo S80 or V70
Mercedes E class
Lexus RX 450H
BMW 5 series
Will not consider: Audi, VW – had one of each and just not reliable enough.
However, the thing is that modern cars have more electronics and intelligence built in, so we don't know how well they will last, including the newer BMWs and other brands.
I replaced my old beemer (which was excellent value for money) with a new 3-series on a PCP deal; I decided to have a change.
I think, though, that the old e39 was probably the best car I have (and probably will) own.0 -

Agreed about the Superb.
There a several in use by the Met in London, I don't think any are diesel, all the most powerful petrol lump with AWD I believe, at least Flying Squads are. Been very reliable aswell.
The Met also has several V70's and the LAS has had XC70's for several years now which are now used on the Joint Response team which is the new name for Op Plato.0 -
One of my friends is on the Squad. So you clearly know more than him. It is the car he usually uses. Much better than the Jag XF they have which is in the fitters again.
He has the new shape Superb which replaced the old shape Superb he used for over 5 years.

Look on Briskoda, loads of issues with Superb seats. Shame really it should be a good car.
Although not really much larger than an Octavia.0 -

Have never heard that opinion, the wheelbase is something 300mm longer.
Probaly not as good as the old version which had loads of room in the back.
What is the issue with the seats? Comfort, wear?0 -
Thank you all.
The Honda accord was a good choice, but we found it a little cramped in the back.
Have decided to go with the V70.
