The lexus probably only one I'd guarantee to be working 100% in 10 years time. And IMO much better looking than the x5, certainly the one I'd choose.

If you can see past the badge get yourself a Skoda Superb. You will be able to get a much newer car and it still ticks all the boxes.

Apart from the OPs reluctance to buy VAG.

What about a Honda Accord Tourer?

Avoid if you're tall. I REALLY want one and have done for about 3 years. When we changed cars 3 years ago there was more leg room in the 2008 Civic we bought instead, that made the missus' mind up.

I still want one now she admits we need a bigger boot. but shes making me look at the S-Max and Galaxy...

I'm 6foot4 and have no issues with my rdesign v50, awesome car. Saying that I rarely use the back as the seats are always down and I have rubber matting (DIY/dogs). Its the auto, I said I'd never buy an auto but I love it.

I'm not sure I see the point of the C4 Cactus. it's no higher up than any normal saloon car and not all that spacious...

The OP isn't considering an X5 though. I am not a huge fan of the looks of an X5, but you think the Lexus looks nicer?

So what is your personal experience of the V70? Other than no police officer driving one has ever complained to random man on the street (aka you) about it.

I have driven the XC70 (58 plate I think it was) And a couple of V70's, one was a 2.4 petrol Auto, the other two were Police Spec T5's, both were the older shape not the current one.

So fail to see what you are getting at. I have though asked Coppers about the V70 in comparison to the 5 Series and the first of the Skodas. Many Traffic plod still prefer the Omega. Flying Squad prefer the Skoda Superb.

Why would I ask? Well why ask a Salesman when you can ask somebody that hammers a car all day for work and will give you an unbiased view on its performance and longevity.

Note, again, that I never suggested the V70.

The OP did. So moan at them I don't really care what you think.

The OP has listed the vehicles they have shortlisted.

    I have posted my preference.

Why not contribute a little occasionally instead of being a pain?

He specified he would not consider Audi and VW, which I appreciate are both VAG (along with Skoda) but I'm pretty sure Skoda routinely beats Merc/BMW on all reliability surveys.

Plenty of Police, taxi, private hire folk using Skodas to do a lot of miles.

Given those choices I would probably go for the V70.

I would avoid the 1.6D though as its sluggish

D5 would be nice but to be fair the 2.0D is probably all you need.

For the low end of your budget you could get a really nice V70

To be honest you can also get a nice E Class or 5 Series though Inwould avoid the 2.2 in the Merc and the 2.0 in the BMW as the first sounds like a tractor and the second still seems to be having camchain problems at higher miles.

I assume the cambelt interval in the V70 with the 2.0D is 150k or 10years.

Can't say I would ever consider the Lexus.
