    Is the correct answer.

Have a read of the post #1 where the OP suggests the V70.

    bigjl commented on that suggestion
    .

By suggesting the V70 was the best/a good option.

I have driven the XC70 (58 plate I think it was) And a couple of V70's, one was a 2.4 petrol Auto, the other two were Police Spec T5's, both were the older shape not the current one.

So fail to see what you are getting at. I have though asked Coppers about the V70 in comparison to the 5 Series and the first of the Skodas. Many Traffic plod still prefer the Omega. Flying Squad prefer the Skoda Superb.

Why would I ask? Well why ask a Salesman when you can ask somebody that hammers a car all day for work and will give you an unbiased view on its performance and longevity.

Note, again, that I never suggested the V70.

The OP did. So moan at them I don't really care what you think.

The OP has listed the vehicles they have shortlisted.

    I have posted my preference.

Why not contribute a little occasionally instead of being a pain?

No they didn't, it was the Senator they preferred. ;)

Thank you all for your helpful comments.

I hadn't thought about the Honda Accord Tourer, but will have a look at these. The reviews

I'm leaning towards the V70 at the moment, as it's got the most comfortable seats of all the cars I've tried and the estate provides extra flexbility. And from the reviews pretty reliable as for safety - well its a volvo.

One last question - the Mrs suggested a Mazda6. any thoughts on this?

I have one. 122k miles in seven years from new. Comfortable. Powerful, 45mpg and above all phenomenally reliable. Get one. You won't be disappointed.

Hired a V70 T5 in Provence for a week in June. My only criticisms were rearward visibility (including through the rear door windows) and the Satnav being awkward and slow to use. Maybe all new cars are the same in these respects ..... my newest car is nearly 11 years old.

I understand the OP is not looking at Audi. However we have owned a Q7 for around 3 years now and it has been a brilliant car. For his budget he could get something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2010-Audi-q7-3-0-tdi-quattro-auto-full-s-line-plus-spec-sat-nav-leather-may-px/122076037879?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D37255%26meid%3D37978ef346cf45fe848f30487e9b0a93%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D18%26sd%3D142077389417

Plenty of room and no problems with power. Cost of running has been surprisingly low...though I keep it away from the Audi dealerships as they tend to charge more than the cost of the car to just look at it.

Nice looking Audi that, but who would pay 20k for a 6 year old car with 80k on it? I guess people will, but put a lot of mileage on that and you'll see some scary depriciation.

I always fancied the ABT version but the price...

Especially since that's not even an original spec'd vehicle, and has been fiddled with. Look at the description and seller's other items.

I can only comment on the 3.0 V6 engine. 80k on that sort of engine..if looked after...is absolutely nothing and is only really getting going. That engine is around 250bhp, which can be remapped to around 310bhp.

To be honest the scary depreciation is in the first 3 years, which is when we purchased ours. 18 months ago it levelled off and has held pretty steady since then.
