Have £15k- £20k to spend on the next car. Aim is to buy reasonably new (up to 4 yrs old) and then keep for at least the next 10 yrs.
Key requirements – safety, reliability and space to carry 5, sizeable boot

Current thoughts

Volvo S80 or V70
Mercedes E class
Lexus RX 450H
BMW 5 series

Will not consider: Audi, VW – had one of each and just not reliable enough.

Given those choices I would probably go for the V70.

I would avoid the 1.6D though as its sluggish

D5 would be nice but to be fair the 2.0D is probably all you need.

For the low end of your budget you could get a really nice V70

To be honest you can also get a nice E Class or 5 Series though Inwould avoid the 2.2 in the Merc and the 2.0 in the BMW as the first sounds like a tractor and the second still seems to be having camchain problems at higher miles.

I assume the cambelt interval in the V70 with the 2.0D is 150k or 10years.

Can't say I would ever consider the Lexus.

You say that but if you are keeping for 10years depreciation is likely to even out and may even be less than he depreciation of you bought several £10k or £12k run of mill estates.

£15/20k could easily get you a fairly new car that cost £30k or more new, seems decent value for money to me.

However if the OP is over six foot he won't be carrying four others of any considerable size and the ability to carry five is one of his musts.

The OP is considering an S80 or V70.

So why not quote their post and pick fault.

Can't say I have ever heard of any complaints from the various plod I have seen driving V70's

And in fact I had any significant issues in the smaller V50

But as you say you are an ex Copper you would know that there are few complaints about comfort and indeed reliability with the V70

You chose the focus on the V70, no one else.

Do you dispute the lack of rear leg room give your vast knowledge of this car? After all you only post from experience.

As I said if the driver is 6 foot plus you're lucky to get your fist between the back of the drivers seat and the rear seat. Hardly a car to comfortably fit five.

It's also got a terrible turning circle.

So what is your personal experience of the V70? Other than no police officer driving one has ever complained to random man on the street (aka you) about it.

v50 rear leg room is poor OP.
Re V70 build quality and reliability. Great in the past but declined in recent years which is why fewer are used by the police. Hopefully on the up since Ford gave up ownership.
What about a Honda Accord Tourer?

If you can see past the badge get yourself a Skoda Superb. You will be able to get a much newer car and it still ticks all the boxes.
