I used to leave my phone somewhere that I couldn't see or hear it on my days off when working retail, as I'd inevitably answer it if it rang and then feel guilty if I declined to come in. Much easier to find the expected missed call a couple of hours later and know it was far too late to call back.
But that was pre-smartphone days, nowadays being without my phone for so long would feel very odd."You won't bloom until you're planted" - Graffiti spotted in Newcastle.

Your retail experience sounds fun and exhausting - and helping you lose weight so sounds like a win win to me
Need to check out those reindeer bao bunsDON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

I went for a wander around 'your store' a couple of evenings ago. It was a sensory overload!!! But I made sure I didn't leave my breakfast rubbish hidden under some clothing...

I appreciate your restraint! It is bizarre how many people buy food and drink that they don't actually consume, they just leave it balanced precariously on something, because the cleaning fairies will know where it is and take it to the magical land of 'away'. We even had a full cup of soup left on the kids book shelves this week. I mean who even thinks that is an acceptable thing to do??Yes it is sensory overload, a glitter-fest of tat, terrible music, and the shelves are emptying at a horrific rate. You can actually feel the panic of shoppers. Which, of course, is anathema to me, it is a bit like voyeurism on some weird kinky lifestyle that has nothing to do with me! and the waste!! Plus knowing that it will all be cheaper in 2 weeks time when 'the day' is over, and I will hoover up lots of lovely things for 60% off the original 60% off price plus 10% staff discount. Now my lovely new-to-me mirror is waiting at the top of the stairs for Saturday (my day off!) and a drilling frenzy. It is so long since there has been a nearly full length mirror in my house. In fact, it has been (counts on fingers) 8 years since we left DH's triple mirrored wardrobe behind in Manchester.I saw a lovely rescue dog yesterday, his name is Stag, he is here:Isn't he a beauty! One day I will have a deerhound in my life. Big soppy muppet. But I do not have a garden, so no dog in my immediate future. He looks like he would understand stuff, and sympathise. No matter what it was.The shop job is over before February starts, I do not think I will miss it. It is good to tick something off the list. I have graduation work booked the week before half term, and DH has very helpfully booked himself flights to Austria for 5 days right in the middle of the 9 days of holiday. I need a plan to do something that half term.Right, on with the day, not working until 4.30 pm, will steal DS2s bus pass and get to work for £0. Had great plans to get things done yesterday and ended up doing the bare minimum.I have a list, I have a plan, and most importantly, I have another day off tomorrow!! Whoop Whoop.Keep warm!4/10/22One Year Mortgage Free Yay!

Hi f0xh0les, just delurking to say, please don't let you not having a garden put you off rescuing a dog. We have 3 and no garden. We go out for walks 4 times a day and have a whippet, whippet x, and a greyhound, so all sighthounds like the beautiful Stag and contrary to popular belief do not need a lot of exercise, so our walks are usually 15 mins to 30 mins and now it's cold sometimes they just go out to toilet and want to go straight back home! 🙂Mortgage Balance as of July 2025 £14,900.
