I had to be out today and was worried how hot the house would be when I got back (it was pretty sweltering yesterday). I shut the downstairs windows (apart from the loo) and closed the blinds (I have the daylight privacy ones under the curtains in the sitting room, dining room and office, an ordinary one in the utility room and a roman blind in the loo - nothing in the kitchen which needs sorting out when I have a kitchen!), opened the windows on the landing and upstairs, put the privacy blinds down on south facing windows, left muslin curtains at the bathroom and two bedroom windows, and nothing on the north facing one. Landing has a thermal blind which was half down. There was enough breeze that it's not too bad - landing is hot, but bedrooms are OK. Kitchen is hot, but then I've got the oven on cooking aubergines for baba ganoush and roasting elderly peppers.

Sorry to hear about FIL F0xh0les but sounds like the best possible prognosis for 'that kind of thing'

Hot here too, hall is still reading 27.5 degrees! Blinds in the lounge have been shut for 2 days, and main bedroom, back windows open in the house and the main bedroom but except for lots of slamming doors I'm not convinced it's anything other than a hot air vortex.

We've had family visiting from north of the border this week, the kids have really been struggling in the heat as they are just it used to it (amazing the diff 400 miles makes), they have decamped to other family nearby and then are retreating at a steady pace back north after that. It was lovely seeing them, also handy I could whip out a paddling pool for the kids (no one questioned why a house with two adults and no kids might have such a thing :rotfl:)

Ice lollies also in the freezer here.

The local fakeb00k page is full of cctv of weirdos leaping back yard fences and trying door handles, there were 3 car s broken into last night, two streets over, and the police have put out a message recommending buying a fan and keeping windows closed. Quite the crime spree over here at the minute. I do close the windows when I leave a ground floor room and am pathological about locking front and back doors. The kids, however, leave everything open and wander off to the top floor.

    They drive me nuts!

I wfh so am here the majority of the time, would never intentionally go out without locking / closing everything up beforehand, would rather have an oven with all my things still safely present in than a nice cool empty (burgled) house.

Just catching up on your exploits f0xh0les - you are a saint that deserves a medal and more for putting up with your stepgran…
It's much cooler here since we got home - 16 at the moment, but when I got in last night it was so hot and stuffy in the house it was unbelievable.

Glad you are back and no dramas.

Step-gran is giving me the silent treatment since I rang her and told her I would be over. She said '8 days, is that all I get?' I told her it was all I could give her with my family commitments. 'But DH can pick them up', she said, not when he is at work, or at a blimmin' conference in Newcastle, or in a field down by Bedford.
Honestly, it would be worth getting a job just so I have a legitimate excuse for not visiting these people. Where the heck do they get their feeling of entitlement from???? Paid employment is all they respect. DH can't possibly come, he works dontcha know. It cannot go on forever (my new mantra) and breathe.....

Make up a paid job. I'm sure the rest of the family would happily corroborate your story ;)

I quite like this idea. Maybe make a payslip for all the work you actually do?
