If you said that you'd pay him "something" then yes you should do that before you spend money on another project.

I think it's also incredibly cheeky to say you'll pay something, make somebody wait for 18 months and then start new work before having paid for the first job!

We haven't started any new work though, we have been to kitchen places to get quotes, but we're still looking around.

I can see how it seems from his eyes, but we fully intended to give him what we had planned before his bill and we also had enough for the utility room. Now if we pay his bill, it means we can no longer afford the utility room.

I suppose she hasn't got around to paying him.. because he hasn't got around to finishing the job yet!

whichever way you go, [STRIKE]his[/STRIKE] your behaviour is going to have knock-on effects on [STRIKE]his[/STRIKE] your relationship with him and his ongoing dealings with your husband and family. That is always a foolish, short-sighted thing to do.

I sympathise with [STRIKE]your[/STRIKE] his sense of [STRIKE]shock[/STRIKE] being shoved to the back of the queue and hope this little to-do can be dealt with swiftly and kindly. Good luck.

Crikey! Your subsequent comments put a whole new and different slant on things.

So why haven't you done it?

You might know you planned to give it to him but all he can see is you starting to arrange another expensive spend while he's waiting with nothing.

I expect his bill is a result of the way you have kept him waiting for his money. Apologise for the delay and negotiate a sum that you're both happy with - and don't ever let/ask him to help again.

Thanks everyone for your replies. They were all very helpful.

When he finished, he asked us if we were paying him or not, we said we hadn't intended to but we'll give something.

I see where the confusion has come from - I misphrased the above line, he doesn't actually know we intended giving him some money.
We never mentioned it to him, we just always had it our heads that we would give him something when we can - which we can now and we also have enough saved for installing the utility room - which is why we went to get quotes.

Maybe we'll try negotiating something we're both happy with - let's hope it works out!

Your second version of events sheds a completely different light on it.

You promised him something and kept him waiting for 18m ?! Really ??

No wonder he's brassed off when he hears your next spending plan is coming soon and no wonder you suddenly got a padded out bill.

18m ago he might have been in the wrong but now its pretty much you.

But you must have had the money to pay him ages ago if you have also saved enough to pay for the utility room.

Why didn't you give it to him as soon as you had it?

It explains a lot about the invoice.
