    So.
They say that this number must have been provided by a local list that someone has, and that's not their problem. .

    I disagree with this.
You were given this information by a Currys representitive in a Currys store, working in Currys time.
Therefore it is CURRYS who have given you this number to ring.

As you have lost no money, it is perhaps a moot point and can go in the book as a lesson learned..

It is an interesting twist on the "microsoft support scam" though ,
Have an employee at a reputable department store on a comission to push unsuspecting customers their way.

    Nasty

Make sure that any payment request or continuous payment authority (that the company may have processed) is cancelled with the bank/card provider.
  • Hi Paul, just want to know if you've had any more dealings with these cowboys and if they've contacted you again, for payment or anything else? Same thing happened to someone I know with these people!

Hello all, so two things are going on.

I managed to make contact with Curry's through Twitter and their CEO email. They really couldn't care less through their other numbers, going into branch, etc.

They've denied that this is a company endorsed helpline, and the branch manager has denied his guys wrote it on the slip! SO we'll see, I have the leaflet they wrote it on.

Secondly, I've called the 'helpline' a couple of times and been very firm about not paying. I've removed all traces of their software. Up to now, they've said they won't phone again - we'll see.

We've not paid, luckily, so hopefully this is pretty much the end of it. Again - we'll see!

Finally - Curry's are an utter nightmare -don't bother! (not that you lot or I would!)

I'd recommend saving any important data files to an external drive then wiping the hard drive and reinstall the OS and any other programs needed to be on the safe side as suggested in post #8

Of course they have - because it isn't

Like i said, if it were me, i would go into the store demand the manager, and point out the idiot who gave you that number.

There's no way i would let this lye - That guy need sacking

Of course, they can still deny writing it and unless you are going to get some handwriting analysis done proof is going to be hard to provide.
I agree the guy needs sacking, but, the likelihood of that happening are remote, if the manager is backing him and who knows, he may be in on it.
Personally, as it's cost nothing but a little time and hassle, I would move on and hope a lesson has been learnt.

Just had a call from a very legal and dour man from Currys.

He said "What if I told you that the CCTV shows nothing but our man handing her the leaflet and no writing on it"

I mean, without my mum putting in a request for the CCTV, I'm cornered now (and I would, but she won't)

At least if any good comes out of it, someone is going to be very very careful about doing it again, and it's logged here if there is another occurrence.
