Hello all - hoping I can get some help and an opinion on this.
My mum called me today to help her with some router issues. After a fair bit of delving, I could tell she was upset.
She'd had trouble with her printer, went into Curry's and the KNOWHOW guys gave her a number for a company called UK INFOTECH - 08000148095.
The details from there are sketchy, but it looks like the guy on the phone scanned her PC, got control (probably with permission, I'm not saying he did anything illegal) and after about an hour, said it was full of viruses, and she should take out a full 2 years service with them.
He phoned back later and said the printer issues were probably a blocked nozzle. (obviously!!!)
They've billed her for £220 for work on the computer and this 2 year service - none of which she understood anything about.
I'm really annoyed - she was upset and confused about all this and thinks he'll have her details from the computer so will make her pay. I've told her that won't happen (please god)
Anyone got any ideas of what to do with this now?

My first action would be to call Curry's customer complaints or visit the store manager to ask why these are being recommended and is it official company policy ?
Is this the outfit as the phone number matches ?

Looking at the website it provides no company number etc which if it is limited company then falls afoul of the E-Commerce Regulations.

The domain registrant's address is amusingly a chippy:
Castle Fish and Chips, 333 Dover Road, Upper Walmer CT14 7NX.
That phone number also turns up here:

In my opinion I'd say these are a dodgy set up.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Yeah me too.
Thanks. I'll have a word with currys.
So soul destroying for my mum!0 -
She might be able to cancel the 2 year service if its within the 14 day cooling off period.0

Depends on whether the "service" has been agreed as having already started.0 -

I agree. I think they'll say the main service was all the other unnecessary stuff they did when they took over her pc.
Just phoned currys. They don't have a recommended printer repair place.. Looks like someone in the shop had it on a list. Don't know how liable that makes them though...0 -
Wow that sounds like the typical !!!! you get when one of the indian "microsoft engineers" calls you to tell you your machine is causing problems on the internet !!
My guess is that the teenage "knowhow" guy has a vested interested in this little scam and i would complain in the highest order.
If it were me personally then i would get down to Currys, demand to speak to a manager, point out the "knowhow" guy responsible and have him held to account..
As it is a Currys rep who has advised this service, in Currys time, as a Currys employee, then i would be expecting Currys to put this right0 -

I doubt you can cancel a service with what appears to be a scammer. I would have also have doubts about what has been added to the PC and would personally wipe it and do complete reinstall from a clean installation media.0 -
So. Currys won't take this seriously, either at branch or on the phone or on twitter .. I've emailed the CEO also.
They say that this number must have been provided by a local list that someone has, and that's not their problem.
I've spoke with these cowboys on the assistance line, and managed to speak with"Dave" Nitesh (that's what's on his signature) he considers that everything he did was authorised by my mum.
That could be the case, but she was totally bamboozled by the whole thing.
For now I've told him there's no way we'll be paying. She's obviously worried that they have access to the pc now... I'm going to remove anything weird.0 -
As far as I can see, So far you haven't paid them anything, correct?
If so just make sure your PC is clean and forget them. I doubt very much that they will try and recover any monies. If they do, they will have to produce the recorded call where your mother was supposed to have given authority.....No doubt, it will just reinforce the fact that it's a scam, they won't want that.
Also, lesson learned........Don't go to Currys for advice...Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
A PIRATE
Not an Alcoholic...!0 -
