  • jamie olivers pork with peaches, im an experienced good cook and i looked at the timings and thought they looked a bit short - made it, bunged it in the oven, took it out after the required time and it was still oinking.... stuck it back in for the time i would have given it and it was delicious.some of nigellas recipes are lovely (guinness cake much loved by oh) others totally disgusting.one of my fave books is valentina harris's italian cookery course.

SO glad I started this thread...it's hilarious!! :rotfl:

On another note, I know I must be the only person in the English-speaking world to say this but I do not trust Delia recipes
She is responsible for every failed sponge cake and every failed Shrove Tuesday party pancakes. Since then and a few other mishaps I don't use her recipes anymore.

did you see the programme when she did roasted potatoes and they were burnt - my sister had to ring me up afterwards to gloat. st delia drives me insane, quarter of a teaspoon of salt etc.... aaaghhh just throw some in

  • sorry for so many posts on this - its a subject close to my heart. mary berry is fantastic as is margurite pattern. i have an old very tatty sainsburys book of home baking and apart from the lemon sparkle cake which was an abject failure everything else is totally delicious. i also have the 1970s supercook series which is fab. the bero book and the stork book are good for new cooks. i have inside info that nigella lives for 6 months of the year on ready meals and baked potatoes

I think the only thing I'll never make again is icing. I made some for a cake once, and it was a disaster. It just never set! So I'll stick to buying the ready made roll out stuff.

  • I can't get anything of Nigella's to work but last Xmas was the final straw. I made her 'peanut chocolate cups', they are supposed to be like something Americans love, and they were beyond disgusting, used a lot of decent chocolate and have put me right off her. I think she had an American Mum didn't she, so perhaps her taste is quite influenced by that, but I approac her recipes with great caution now. (In the end I meanly took them to a party we had been invited to given by someone who has been very rude and unkind to me in the past, but is a good friend of OH's. They little choc peanut thingies looked wonderful - all decorated etc, but I noticed that no one had more than one !!!!!!)

I find this again and again with TV cookbooks -they insist on undercooking meat. I like my beef and lamb rare but not pork and chicken. Nigel Slater is another one who reckons you only need 40 mins to cook a chicken.

I've come to the conclusion that such books are best treated as ideas for different combinations of flavours. I've been noting down the ideas I like in Nigella's new book and will make my own version of them rather than follow her instructions.
  • Funnily enough I was just looking at the Nigella Express book today and wondering whether to buy it, but you lot have put me off.
As to recipies that go wrong, flapjacks I have tried several times different recipies but they never work. A cheesecake I got off the internet this week as I couldn't find the recipie I used last time. It didn't set after leaving it overnight. So I wondered if I could make it into icercream. I kept stirring it and putting it back in the freezer. In the morning it was just a solid lump so I chucked it.
I have a recipie for yoghurt cake. I have made it loads of times and it was always really good.

Nigella's express chicken curry - not brilliant, won't bother with anymore of her recipes!
