Met a bloke in business class on a long haul flight (no first on that airline). By chance, bumped into him again on a different flight a few weeks later.

CEO of a listed company. Owns a small island. Has a yacht. Has his own manufacturing business too which his "wife" keeps an eye on. Has a second wife too, and kids at private schools.

Was interested in a business plan I had and offered to put it to his Venture Capital "friends". When I told him I needed £0.5M, he said "only that" and said that he'd just write out the cheque himself. I got distracted onto other things, and didn't take him up on the offer.

Anyway, he bought me a drink at some posh place in Hong Kong. What card did he slap down? A Nationwide Gold credit card - because they "don't load foreign transactions".

Obviously the guy was a total loser.

I notice NatWest do a Black Mastercard which is Branded 'World Elite' on the back, is this considered a 'Posh' card, or would a Barclays Black Cashback Amex be Posher ?.

to answer the question rather than make judgements.. World Elite is 'posher', the Barclaycard is 'standard'. but the messages above are right in that it's all about the terms. i use Amex as my main card but the alternative spending cards in my wallet are a TSB Visa Debit and an Asda Money mastercard. not in any way prestigious, but the terms are right:D

Very sensible post, just hope the 'money tucked away at the bank' is a figurative expression, we know that banks are poor homes for significant sums and there are other investments that make more sense for most people.

Ha Ha! Very true, actually some of our cash is in a 123 santander account at the moment because of the reasonable rates. So i guess it's partly true!!!

Not sure how much longer though because of the changes they are making.
  • I have an HSBC World Elite card (no annual fee)
But I use Monzo card (yes ugly design) outside UK because of good FX rate, no non-sterling fee, no ATM fee.
  • My posh crefit card is issued by...m and s
