Post #2 gave the correct answer. Everything since then has been a waste of time and effort.

The OP was simply misinformed by Vodafone about the cost.

I think the issue is that OP didn't want to risk it, based on what Vodafone told them.

Sorry not been on for a few days.

Thanks for your replies, I needed to make another 03 call today and rang voda to see if the DVLA call had been charged but it hasn't so as you say the earlier posts about the Ofcom site and the voda site are correct,

Thanks for your help, much appreciated. xx

Funnily enough, a call I was charged for was an emergency number - 101. That was charged at 15p, the agent said that was a mistake and took it off.

For those that were perhaps not being as helpful as they could have been. Yes, I have a landline but my batteries on my handset need replacing, I couldn't get any in the time I needed to make the call, hence, I had to use my mobile. I was worried in advance about how much that call was likely to cost knowing how long you are often kept waiting for a human to answer.
In the end, they said I needed to go to the Post Office either with the log book signed by myself and my brother and the box filled in about the taxation class being altered from disabled to PLG or fill in a form V62?(or V68?) and take it with the new keepers section. I could then tax it and also arrange to pay by DD. So all sorted now.

101 is not an emergency number, that's the whole point of it.

It's supposed to be charged at a flat rate of 15p per call, so the Vodafone operator was wrong to refund you.

Batteries? Very few landline handsets NEED batteries. Where they have them, they're usually just for fripperies like powering screen illumination.

ALL cordless handsets need batteries. (Rechargeable or otherwise) ;)

Not if you leave the handset on the charging station :)

After buying our first cordless phones some years ago it clicked that in a powercut you have no phones. The base station needs power. So we had to fit a corded phone anyway.

Should have stuck to the corded ones.

Daughter just received a letter from the DVLA saying her direct debit failed. Letter dated the 1st Aug. Except she didnt pick the car up and tax it until the 2nd, first payment on the 16th then 1st of each month afterwards..

I phoned them and it seems the letter was probably for the previous keeper who taxed it and then SORN'd it a day or 2 later.

Yes it does ... even if you leave it on a charging station. What do you think the charging station is charging up? ;)

Bod 1467 is correct, my cordless handset does have batteries, two of them, there is a box on the back of the unit, this will be the second time I have changed them but it is a Panasonic and the batteries for this particular model are quite hard to get, I got the last ones from Maplins in the end.
When the batteries run out or are very low, you are unable to dial out.

Forgot my name - 'Not if you leave the handset on the charging station' - 'charging station' - its in the name - charging station to charge the batteries!!
