I am having my brother's car but at the moment the taxation class is 'disabled' which is free. I need to change it so that I can tax it for me - not disabled - but the only number I can seem to find for the DVLA is an 0300 number which is 45p a minute on my mobile. I haven't got a working phone attached to my landline so can't ring them. Has anyone got an ordinary number for them please?

Calling a 0300 number costs the same as an 01/02 number. The official statement from Ofcom is:

“Many organisations use 03 numbers as an alternative to more
    expensive 08 numbers.
How much do calls cost? Calls cost no more than calls to geographic
numbers (01 or 02) and must be included in inclusive minutes and
discount schemes in the same way. Calls from landlines are typically
charged between 2p and 10p per minute; calls from mobiles typically
cost between 10p and 40p per minute. Calls from landlines and mobiles are included in
    free call packages.”

So finding a regular landline number isn't going to cost less it seems.

I have an unlimited call deal from Vodafone but they told me it would be 45p a minute, knowing how long you can sometimes hang on with these types of agencies its likely to cost a fortune at 45p a minute,

Thanks for pointing out that, I've just had another argument with Voda who still insisted it was 45p a minute even though I quoted what was on the Ofcom website and told them it was supposed to be a local rate call.

Much appreciated, both of you, Thanks again.

I notice in the link that it doesn't say that 0800 numbers are now included although I know they are.

    So call from a landline.

    That's a lame excuse.

Can you go to a local post office? When I bought an ex-Motability car, it was all sorted out at the Post Office. I think it was just an extra box to tick on the form, but the dealer did the paper work, so I couldn't be 100% sure of that.

You can buy a phone from the likes of Argos for about £5.00. Handy to have in case of emergencies, and to check your landline is OK if you have any broadband faults. (Assuming you have ADSL or fibre/FTTC ... if you use Virgin cable or MiFi then a landline phone wouldn't help with fault finding).

Why is that? A lot of people I know don't have a physical landline handset anymore, in fact many don't have a landline.

If they've got internet access then 9 times out of 10 they've got a phone socket, just need to plug in a phone.
