They have only seen pics at mo, it looks and feels much worse in the flesh so to speak , am going to take it in next week.

I have posted pics on a seat forum

I really want to know what my rights are and who with.
Your "rights" are with the dealership, that's who you have a contract with, not the manufacturer. Have you considered getting a 2nd opinion from another dealership?

It seems to me that a car's steering wheel should not deteriorate after 1000 miles and the dealer/manufacturer attempting to deflect the issue is pretty shabby.

Leather steering wheels can develop creases if the owner is of the sort that slathers their hands in moisturising creams. Therefore I can see why they'd exclude it from warranty, because in those circumstances it would certainly be classed as "customer abuse".

As for the mileage , why the need for the seriously question

We have 2 cars one does 30000 a year this one does between 3 and 5 but not sure why it is relevant
I hope it's worth the quid-and-a-chunk per mile depreciation.

Is that the section of the wheel were the driver tends to keep their hand?

Have seen similar before on cars.

It could be something to do with the drivers hand cream.

Clearly the material used is more about aesthetics rather than longevity.
  • Nothing on a four month old car should be showing any signs of wear and tear, surely.

    Things wear.

If the issue was in a section that the regular driver rarely touched then you could definitely say it's an issue with the wheel.

However if it is the bit where the driver routinely holds the wheel then it could easily be something the driver has done, wether deliberate or not.

I wonder if the driver might habitually slightly twist their hand back and forward on the wheel?

Perhaps this could have stretched the leather?

Funnily enough one of the few cars I had a problem with that was not fixed to my satistfaction was a Seat, the fairly common issue of the gearstick having a resonance at peak torque in 3rd, would go away if you put your hand on it.

A mate with a Golf with the same engine has his gearbox and some mounts changed for the same problem.

    Annoying.

Of course they do, but not after four months.

The leather steering wheel on my car is seven years old and is perfect apart from a couple of shiny bits where I normally keep my hands. That's wear and tear, and after seven years is to be expected. But not after four months - four years maybe!

    no its not

it is the top section, my wife tends to hold the steering wheel each side where the leather is thicker and perforated.

she doesnt put hand cream on in the mornings before getting in the car ( i had already asked her that)
