Going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or 10 is a far steeper learning curve than that needed when figuring how to use Linux Mint. Linux Mint is quite an easy system to use. The days of having to use command lines etc are long gone.
Also support costs? There are none. Plenty of free advice available on the many forums.0 -
being as they gave everyone so long to download w10 free, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't cut support for 7 and 8 sooner than 2020, forcing people to upgrade at a cost.
I've stayed with 7, my 10 year old acer will be due renewal for w11, when support is withdrawn..
if it ain't broke, why fix it.
I even still use a nokia 1100 phone
.luddite.
kiss;;;keep it short and simple
Microsoft have bailed from the phone market and are vague at best in the tablet market.
They would need to have a real think about their ability to force anybody to do anything.
(Incidentally, MS have said there won't be a Windows 11.)0 -
There never was a plan for a Windows 11.
Windows 10 is a rolling update the same as Office 365.
That is why some updates are complete OS images0 -

If you're going to use GNU/Linux without bothering to use a terminal shell, then why would you go to the effort of using Linux at all? Surely Windows would be a much better choice for people who aren't technically-minded?
If you want a proper operating system that gives a technically-competent user control, get a decent distribution of GNU/Linux. If you never want to type a text command and want the computer to be easy-to-use, use Windows.
It seems silly to choose GNU/Linux just for bragging rights.0 -

I beg to differ, considerable savings using Linux can be achieved and is no more difficult to manage 72,000 Linux workstations than windows workstations:

Sometimes you have to resort to the CLI in a Linux DE however on occasions in Windows you have to resort to Powershell or hacking the registry. MS have generally made Windows more idiot proof however there always is the idiot you haven't accounted for.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Everything else is pretty much the same if, like me, you don't use an MS account and remove all the apps. Also support costs? There are none. "Resort"?! Now that's not the right attitude!
Typing commands that do exactly what you want instead of faffing around with a hundred clicks in a GUI is one of the joys of GNU/Linux, isn't it?!Fightsback wrote: »MS have generally made Windows more idiot proof however there always is the idiot you haven't accounted for.
Totally -- Windows is a pretty good product in terms of being "idiot proof". Linux is more powerful, and in many cases easier/quicker/simpler to use than Windows if you know what you're doing. But you can break stuff more easily if you don't.0 -

Have I missed he opportunity to get W10 installed for free :(
No

I was offered Windows 10 for free. Which I would have used on my laptop which 5 years old.
I decided not to upgrade , as so many other people where saying that it slowed there laptop down and mine is slow enough (probably due it's age), or they had other problems.
I will probably have to change this laptop soon because of age anyway have to get used to all of those funny boxes you click onto like on the microsoft phone I own.I am a Senior Ambassador on the Competitions Time Board and the Old Style MoneySaving Board.
