Don't forget to have some 'me' time where you can push all the mum and sister problems right to the very back of your mind and concentrate on you, your husband and your children.
Good luck love x
Oh thank you, I could do with that hug right now, I'm very tearful. I feel bad because I read awful stories on here where someone has found out their partner has loads of debt they didn't know about etc and are having to deal with it and here's me harping on about a debt that isn't even mine.
Thank you for your hug, it has cheered me up x0 -
Are you absolutely certain that the debt is indeed all your sister's? I am asking because you've stated that your mum had run debts before, so clearly it's been a problem before, and the fact that she says she doesn't want you to mention it to your sister. Could it be that she is so embarrassed that it has happened again, she is saying that it's the fault of your sister so you're more likely to be sympathetic?
Good point but my mum has said that some of it is hers but most of it is my sisters. I believe her this time because even my mum can't spend that sort of money on her own. If you went into her small flat you would also understand that she hasn't spent anywhere near that sort of money on herself. A couple of the catalogues are for men only and one is specifically for autism, they must be my sister.
You are right when you say that my mum knows I feel sorry for my sister and therefore won't want to upset her and therefore find out how much of this debt is hers but my mum has told me what she owes and that part makes sense.
I do feel like who is telling me the truth and not knowing what to believe though, so for now I am concentrating on getting this debt sorted and then just keep my fingers crossed that will be the end of it.
Thank you for your reply.0 -
I've got my mum to look at what bankruptcy means and got her to look at the government website about it. I want her to decide that it's the best option and not me. My mum has a few questions and although I have had a quick look and think I know the answers, just thought I would run it by you lovely peopl.
My mum rents from the council, am I right in telling her that she won't be evicted because she has been made bankrupt, her rent is upto date.
Her only income is 2 pension payments, am I right in thinking that even though they mention your pension pot etc, my mum won't have her pension money stopped because that's all she gets?
Finally, when she becomes bankrupt, what will happen at the end of her phone contract etc? Will she be able to get a new contract with a new company or with the same company?
Sorry, so many questions but my mum is asking them and I haven't had the time to find out. We are meant to be going on holiday tomorrow but have delayed it because I need to get this sorted out first, I've got some packing done today but keep crying and struggling to concentrate. My husband got my grand children to come round to cheer me up, which was lovely. It now I'm further behind, bless hi,.
Thank you so much to everyone, not one person has been judgemental and I really appreciate that.0 -
There's a bankruptcy forum on here, with lots of excellent advice and guidance. Might be better posting the queries on there0

I can’t offer any advice, but I wanted to say I feel for you all. We have a similar situation in our family, and it can be really difficult being the third party in something like this, so invested but torn on how / sometimes whether to help. I hope the situation improves for you all

Thank you, yes it is an awful situation which I'm hoping is for the last time.
I hope your problems are soon resolved and you can go back to concentrating on being a family again. Best of luck x0 -
If your mum cannot get a new phone contract (and I'm unsure) she would be able to use a network with a pay as you go bundle to get a deal for x minutes and texts. These don't credit check. Who is your mum currently with? She can look for a network using the signal of the network that she is on, meaning a negligible if any difference in service received.
Has your mum previously had a new phone with each contract or a sim only plan? Without being able to be approved for credit, she would have to save up for and buy a handset outright, but this is the cheaper route overall as a phone contract effectively lends you the phone, charging interest on it.0 -

Thank you Kim.
Yes, good point, she will be able to get a sim only deal. I'm assuming that nothing will happen until her contract is up for renewal anyway. She is with Vodaphone and already owns her own phone so that will be easy to resolve. The only other problem is her Sky, it's part of a broadband bundle and she just has the basic bundle, plus sport. She will have to cope without it, which isn't a problem but will have to sort out a new broadband package. Just to add to the problem, Sky was originally a present from my mums grand daughter (my niece). She paid for a years subscription and it was in my nieces name. Since then my mum has continued to pay for the subscription but it is still in my nieces name. I've got my mum to ring and explain in the past but Sky say they would need to cancel that contract, start a new one with my mum which would include connection costs etc. My plan was to try and get this sorted but this has come up now. So basically my mum pays it but it's in my nieces name, not sure if to include this within the bankruptcy, what a mess.
Thank you for reassuring me about the sim only deals though.0 -
Just as your sister's debt is legally your mum's, the Sky is legally your nieces. This could work in her favour as she won't have to worry if she can't get accepted for broadband elsewhere (your niece could phone them and cancel the sport/try to haggle them down if necessary.)
This article shows some networks using Vodafone: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/piggybacking . According to the Mobiles section on here, Vodafone themselves are best avoided anyway.0
