    Good morning everyone :hello:

I had another lovely lie in this morning so feel loads better. It's quite a bit cooler too so it feels more comfortable. Hubby has gone off to work for his half day and then he has an appointment to discuss his recent chest x-ray. I am trying not to worry too much but he used to be a very heavy smoker and even though he has given up for the past 13 years it could have consequences.

My lovely FIL is having an operation on his cataracts today as well. I hate living so far away, I wish we could help my MIL and FIL more. They are lovely people and hopefully we will see them in a few weeks at the wedding.

I am going to make chicken satay stirfry for tea. It's from the Eat Well for Less programme and it looked lovely and fresh on the show so I have ordered the ingredients in my shopping that's arriving this morning. DD13 won't be having it though as she hates noodles and nuts so I have made her a little fish pie as that is her favourite.

JackieO, your Jack should definitely have quit. You only get one back and it's pretty essential. Shame on that shopkeeper for taking advantage of him.
Flutterby, I hope you have a lovely time with your stepchildren. Hope your waters don't break in the Pizza Hut although maybe if they do you will have free pizza for life :rotfl::rotfl:.
csarina, I hope your OH gets better soon and is able to come back home.

I hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

Just back on quickly to say well done JackieO on advising Jack to stop that job. It's totally wrong that the man expected him to move those machines. He sounds like a hard working lad. It's very hard for the youngsters these days to find a little job - well done him for the volunteering work. That will be something on his CV and good experience for him.

Hester - hope you paid for the petrol in shrapnel :D

csarina - hugs to your DH

flutterby - spicy hot pizza?? could bring about a baby, you never know lol!!

JackieO - good on you - poor Jack, being taken advantage of like that, those type of people know that these youngsters A. Won't be confident enough to challenge them and B. Need the money - something will come up for him - what about dog walking - so many people work and would be chuffed to have their dog walked for a small cost.

AOT. The recipe is an old school dinner one and its official name is Chocolate Crunch. The children called it chocolate concrete for obvious reasons. I used to make it when I was doing puddings for our homeless project and they loved it too.

JackieO: You were spot on with your DGS. Someone there was on a power trip. Pity they had to vent it on a young boy.

I'm sure I can find him some small jobs to do to help him out over the holidays. Or do you think he should have stayed there.
Absolutely not. That is slave labour; and to be honest, I would question the legality of forcing Jack to lift heavy machines unaided. The H&S people would have a field day with that one, I reckon!

  • Morning all, a dull, cool morning here.

It is my day off so paperwork at home. What horrible person invented laptops? Now my work follows me around in a trolley case.

Cafe Kate, have a lovely adventure and here is the recipe for chocolate concrete. The recipe can be adjusted upwards according to how many mouths to feed/teeth to rot.

    8 oz plain flour
    2 oz cocoa
    4 oz granulated sugar
    4 oz melted margarine.

Mix it up, press into a baking tray and bake for 30 minutes at gas 4.

When cool cut it up but no idea how long it keeps because - apart from me - everyone likes it and it goes immediately. Apparently it should be accompanied by another horror, pink custard. Not sure how custard gets pink, but I don't eat that either so have not even looked it up.

I don't know where I got the recipe so cannot attribute it.

    Pink custard was pink blancmange
    Chocolate custard was blancmange
Mint choc custard was vanilla blancmange with mint essence.

;). Got that from the school dinner thread x

Busy week again. Pottered in the garden on Tuesday,Took Bestie's GD to the zoo on Wednesday, then shopping yesterday, this afternoon when DH gets home from work we are taking MIL to Bletchley DS is coming soon because he has destroyed his shoes andhe needs some more trousers. He is helping his Dad with the school decorating and stripping and sealing the floors this week.

Had to go to the Doctor this morning, I have a nasty bluish rash on my leg and it is really tender, he thinks it might be an infected tick bite, so I am on anti-biotics, if it doesn't clear by next Wednesday I have to go back and have some blood tests :(

JackieO, the shopkeeper needs reporting to the council, no way should a youngster lift those machines, I would question if the employer had adequate liability insurance as well :mad:

csarina, sorry to hear that DH is back in hospital, but it is the best place for him xx

Right best get ready they will be home soon and I have some nice sausage sarnies waiting for them

    BFN xx

    Photogenic Debt-free and Proud!
Thought I'd swing by to tell the good news; I've been offered a job!!

It's my dream company to work for and in a role I've wanted to move into for years. The only slight downside is that they wanted me to take a 2k pay cut for the first 6 months and then to go up to what I'm on at the moment. I pushed back and said I'm very reluctant to take a cut (particularly with this debt hanging over me).

But anyway, good news that I'm delighted to share with you all.

I agree with Floss. I don't know how old the lad is, but moving heavy machines is Manual Handling. He should receive training, appropriate gloves, boots and help and if under 16 is not allowed to do it!.....I believe there are exceptions if you work in the family business but there is still a duty of care to minors above that to all employees.

Lots of folks need help with their watering when they go on holiday....and is there any fruit picking still?....I live abroad and the kids do still pick though most is done by folks from eastern Europe. It is tough but can be well paid. Family farms are more likely to use local pickers..(.the big ones use gangmasters with guys bussed in....these folks are often treated badly).

Back to lurking....I love hearing what's happening in people's lives. ...thank you.
