Hi there
Moanymoany
You have just listed my favourite cuts of meat....mum used to buy a breast of lamb, remove the bones and use them to make stew, and then stuff n roll the breast,
I adore belly pork, covered in runny stuffing, so that all the meat juices soak into it:D ..and we layer up potatoes n onions and put breast of lamb or belly pork on top too....

You can spend a fortune out here if you want to, the selection of every product is amazing...but the only reason i can think that food is cheaper out here is because of the high taxes that Germans pay...
They pay tax as we do, but then they also pay taxes to there town/city.. it works out nearly 50% of their wages:eek: .... but they do get cracking services - the hospitals are like hotels compared to ours, the road sweeper comes every week, the recycling is brilliant and even with these harsh winters the roads are still always clear:T
i have just had a look at some receipts, and the leaflets - we get leaflets from every supermarket in the area every week - it is great for keeping eyes on the bargains-i will just pick a few of the items and convert the prices roughly
1lt fresh milk - 38p
500g bakery bread 49p
1kilo mince -half beef/pork £1.80
500g coffee £1.80
lrg eggs 15peach - but you can get a tray of 3doz for £1.40 (off the egg man - who comes around in and icecream van -but instead of music it makes chicken noises:rotfl:) - he sells allsorts
1 kilo carrots 30p
500g broccoli 56p
132 pampers maxi nappies £18.00
18 toilet rolls £2.00 - and they are better than the "puppy" brand
10kilo washpowder -£7.50 and it lasts forever
I think the best thing here is they do lots of bulk offers - I got a big plastic storage box with 10x 500g pastas - spaghetti and 4 other sorts for £3.00,
and they have just advertised a big clear bucket with a lid that has 2 toilet duck, 1 general cleaner, 1 glass spray, 1 bathroom cleaner and 1kitchen cleaner for £3.00 and it is the proper "duck" brand...can't remember what we call it:rolleyes: ..... it does go to show just how much we in the Uk are being charged.. i am planning on stock piling loo roll, wash powder and anything that doesnt go out of date , for when we come back to the UK....-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
First chance I've had to post for a while...usual school hols chaos then the aftermath...its took me this long to get the house straight and a pile of ironing awaits me
As most are reporting we have also noticed a general increase here in Surrey across the board really and yes the staples are rising quite substantially already.
Fortunately I still am the worlds worst stockpiler so we are in quite a good position if it stays like this for a while..I tend to buy flour, bread mixes, yeast etc every month wether I need it or not so I have quite a healthy (rotated) stock of these.I budget around £150 for a huge staples(and usuals) shop at the start of the month then £50 a week approx for the other 3 weeks,I also started a food storage programme a few years ago due to our often precarious financial situation. This has, over the years been a godsend as bouncing wages cheques and the habit of lurching from one crisis to another has often meant theres been very little cash around some weeks for food!!!
I started slowly and built up my stock over a year or so within my budget so I didn't overspend.I get cold sweats if I now have less than at least a 6 month supply in of everything :rotfl:0 -
I've posted this in the daily but will also post here. Wilkinsons is worth a look if you have one locally...ours sells 2litres milk for 91p, sugar for 69p and 300 typhoo tea bags for 2.49.

Re. price increase in butter. Been watching this thread with keen interest and decided time was right to do a bit more stocking up so went off to Morrison's as they have an offer on at the moment of 33% discount on some of their organic lines (ends tomorrow, I think). I don't usually shop in Morrison's but never look a gift horse in the mouth!
The butter was marked on the shelf 87p which is roughly what I normally pay in Tesco, but went through the checkout at 67p!!! (and that's organic!). It wasn't marked as part of the discounted offer and 20p discount isn't 33% either, so am a bit puzzled but very pleased. :T Not sure if I was just lucky and they've mispriced but might be worth you checking out your local Morrisons.
Other things went through the checkout at less than the marked price too although they didn't have 33% labels:
Cornflakes marked £1.09 went through at 75p.
Arborio rice £1.29 went through at 78p.
Is this usual in Morrisons? If so methinks I'll be going back.0 -

2pt fresh milk - 67p
400g bakery bread 79p
500g mince -£2.13
500g coffee - varies, if its kenco its £2.54, if its co-op own brand its £1.65
6 egss - 80p
1 kilo carrots 99p
500g broccoli 55p
they dont' do bulk buys of things so these comparisions are very pricey.
32 pampers maxi nappies £5.75
4 toilet rolls £2.15
1kilo washpowder -£2.65
yes I could go cheaper at lidly/netto and i will be checking them out now. previusoly though we've found there range is terrible here and alot of stuff isn't any cheaper. I have to get specilaist milk for DS (lactose intolerant) I have to do a tesco/wholefood shop anyway. I can get soya milk for 65p a 1lt carton from tesco rather than £1.25 at the wholefood shop, plus other 'free from' dairy free products.
So I can shop for some stuff at lidl/netto but then I have to do a shop at tesco as well. In the end so far i've fgured it was easier to get a weekly tesco order delivered (use vouchers so rarely have to pay delivery costs). Then I get the clubcard deals and have used them for car hire, trips out etc.
More meal planning and retrainign ym husband are my best options. He hates budgeting though so its very hard.DEBT: £500 credit card £800 Bank overdraft

Hi Mrsmcawber
Thanks for that - quite a difference! I would imagine German supermarkets probably accept lower profits from consumers by the sound of it. Looks like we are all going to have to "vote with our feet" a bit here in England (and hope supermarkets realise their lower takings are supposed to be at the expense of their profits - not their poor suppliers!). On a slightly different tack - do you know what the rates in Germany are for State Pension/National Minimum Wage per hour/Statutory Sick Pay/Unemployment Pay?
I ask because I am very aware that many people are going to have to pay these increased food prices out of an income that comes from one of these sources:eek: I am not at all happy at the thought of paying 30% extra for my food - that will be coming from money meant for other things. But those who receive their income from one of the above......... well, if someone spends the national average on food per person per week (I think thats £30?) - then they will need an extra £9 per week net income. I imagine the lowest possible amount someone could just plain fill their stomach and not be hungry is £15 (so - even eating at that level - one would need an extra £4.50 net per week). Obvious conclusion - State pension/benefits etc need to go up accordingly and cost-of-living rises for other workers will have to be higher in this years payround - now how come I suddenly spot some pigs flying? - but we will all have to put whatever pressure we can on Govt/employers re income on the one hand and supermarkets re their profit levels on t'other hand.0 -
right well I am just off out shopping... normally go on a Friday night but yesterday my DS had a vomiting bug... so I'm off out in a minute.
All I am going to buy is fresh fruit and veg and milk and bread. Honestly!
I've got enough pulses to feed a small army best try and use them. I'll let you know how I get on! Normally spend £50 a week.0 -

34p.....crikey
Stuff isnt even creeping up pennies at a time like normal is it!!!!
When i was talking to my mum the other day she was saying that there had been someone talking about the rises on the radio... they were saying that it is gonna hit quite a few countries...Italy were obviously gonna feel it via pasta, here in Germany they reckoned it was gonna be Beer prices...
I don't care what they do with the beer... its when they start hitting the basics that its a problem....
Looking at the things mentioned on this thread, the Uk seem to be getting increases to all its staple items.....
I have to admit that after getting engrossed in this thread i have just got :- 10 kilo potatoes - £1.40
6 kilo carrots - £1.40
10 kilo cabbage £ 2.10
5 1/2 kilo braeburn/boskoop apples £2.10
And am planning on getting some storing done in one of the rooms in the celler.. i have a large metal shelving unit, so im gonna put some of my collapsable crates on them and get some veg in there.... even if we don't get hit by the price rises, it will come in for when the really bad weather sets in....
Think im gonna have to get some long life milk - for emergancies, some more flour, onions mmm im sure i will think of some more things....
I figure as long as you have potatoes, onions and things to make bread.. you have enough to make a meal....sliced potatoes n onions done in the oven and served with some fresh bread.... one of my favourites..plus its tasty, filling..and cheap :j
Think i had better do a check on my dried goods cupboards..make sure im not low on anything...
Sallyrsm...... good luck with the shop....shopping on a saturday. ..you are brave - lets us know what price rises you find....hopefully not too many-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -
I used to think that Aldi and Lidls were inferior food shops till I went to Germany and saw that they seemed to be the main supermarkets there. I was impressed by the choice and quality of goods costing less than in the UK supermarkets. After my holiday I shop in Lidls first (don't have an Aldi nearby) and then top up my shopping from another supermarket if necessary.. I find that the Co-op and Tescos seem to be increasing their prices faster than some of the other ones.0
