  • this is a scary thought! i spend £60 per week to feed myself, 4 kids, 2 chickens, 4 cats and a hamster. i find this quite hard to do sometimes.

i do stockpile a certain amount of food but havent the space for huge amounts. i think i might just have to have a rethink about my food shopping. as i cant afford to increase it higher than it is.

thanks for a thought provoking thread!

I've just done Mr T. I always buy Lurpak butter (extravagant, I know, but can't stand anything else!). Two weeks ago, it was 94p for a block. Today it was £1.12  that's just under 20% increase.

Decided that I would panic buy all the offers and stockpile on staples before they all go up in price (e.g. Tesco value chopped tomatoes were 14p a tin just over a month ago - they're now 21p a tin.

I have come home with enough loo rolls (16 for the price of 12) to service Wembley Stadium on a cup final match day. Enough tins of tuna and corned beef (both half price on offer) and flour to make bread to feed all the supporters with sandwiches during half time. :o

And enough yellow stickered on offer beef and lamb mince to make enough bolognaise sauce to feed the Italian army. :o

Just need to find somewhere to stash it all now - maybe now is a good time to declutter the cupboard under the stairs!

  • do you think it will still be cheaper to bake your own bread ?

i had a bread maker from my m.i.l a while back but no instructions....

but i am thinking of buying one of those panasonic ones... i know they are expensive...but i have heard that it does make a good loaf of bread....

i am panicking..... more.. now as the price increases are getting more of a reality.... the more times i shop:eek:

we go through a lot of milk and bread....

with the butter situ.... at the begining of the year.... i bought a load of lurpak coupons.. for a free pack....i still have about 30 odd tubs in the freezer:D

is there a website that tells you what best offers the supermarkets have every week ? like the bogof half price etc...instead of going through every website ..

then i can sit down infront of the computer and work my shopping round the offers.... and also what supermarket i will shop at that week....

i have also noticed this week the market prices for fruit and veg creeping up....

I firmly believe it's cheaper to make my own bread. I have the Panasonic breadmaker. I used to buy 3 loaves of quality bread (e.g. kingsmill) a week. - they were usually around the £1 mark each. Two would go in the freezer and get taken out when needed. Trouble is, we never got through a full loaf before it started to mould so I was forever throwing away the nub ends.

I now make a medium sized loaf every other day in the Panasonic using good quality bread flour. The cost of the ingredients works out at about 35pish per loaf (including electricity). I use the fast bake cycle which takes just under two hours. And it tastes far, far better.

Best of all, I no longer have bread taking up space in my freezer so can store extra yellow sticker bargains.

    Hi there

I think it is www.mysupermarket.com that will let you select your normal products and then it will tell you how much it would cost in each of 4 stores..

I love homemade bread.. i have just banished my BM to the cellar for now, as i only ever use it to mix the dough - i then bake it in the oven... so now i have started doing it by hand...
HM bread is so much more filling than any shop bread i have ever tried.. and even if a loaf doesnt come out perfect so what , if its a bit dense as some come out its still great for toast...
When i do a loaf, i now slice it up and pack it in the freezer in 4 slices, so that i can just grab one out for doing hubbies lunch, and any odds n sods get made into stuffing mmmm

Hi there - just had a quick look on that site..and it reckons tesco are doing kingsmill white 800g for 70p or the wholemea ones at 2 for £1.50..

    Hello again

Just out of curiosity, i have just been on the website i mentioned above....
I grabbed one of my random shopping lists... OH MY G*D.....
I have picked items as close to the ones as i get here, so quite a few of those i selected were UK "home brands".... the results came out as :-

    ASDA - £20.31
    TESCO - £20.95
    SAINSBURY- £23.70
    OCADO - £29.07:eek:

And when i converted my shop from euros to £s it actually cost me £11.25

I knew it was cheaper here but ......heck that brings it home.....

  • I've halved my milk order for next week & dug out a litre lidded jug, I'll pour a pint of milk into the jug & top it up with water, hubby won't notice as he only has milk in tea & coffee, the lodger only has soya milk, so hopefully that will solve the milk problem, I bake my own bread & have quite a lot of flour & yeast in & as for butter, I won't buy anymore, I have a quarter of a pack left & when it's gone I'll swap to value soft spread.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.
  • i have just gone onto ebay, and there are money off coupons being sold for free anchor butter plus 30p off vouchers...

might be of help .......buy the butter and freeze.....

i think that might be a novelty for some supermarkets... actually buying the product on the mney off coupon.....lol...
