  • I do my shopping on the internet from Tescos and keep the list to refer back to. All the items on my shopping list had gone up last week compared to the previous week. Most of my items are valve stuff and although they had only gone up by 5 or 10p it all adds up.

And some more bad news, oil went over $80 a barrel yesterday, first time ever.

If it continues to $100 by end of year, as some expect, then it is not just petrol prices but a lot more including food, that is affected

i personally think....if this happens..... plus they are talking about more interest rate rises..... so mortgages will go up (unless you are on a fixed rate....) it could end up a disaster for alot of household......

lets say a family spneds £100 a week on food its now going to cost £130.

also their mortgage will go up with all the interest rates lately that goes up an extra £100 per month ( i am guessing maybe someone more on the ball with mortgages could help out here)

then there will be fuel increases... so that means petrol.... central heating etc.... plus maybe more food price rises... ( transport etc)

we could be looking at appprox £70 extra per week maybe ?

i have taken the plunge and turned my hobby into a business with a workshop unit... phone line etc..... and oneside of my business relies on sales...... and the latest price increases etc... does not look good for me...

I awlays stockpile at this time of year, I just may have to do it for a bit longer. Trouble is, meat, foot and mouth is back and there are no stock movements so no animals going to slaughter. No idea how long this will go on for this time I have my meat box coming next week and no idea if there will be one next month.

  • i bought 2 pints of milk this morning from Tesco Express and it was 76p
i know the express shops are normally a penny or 2 dearer but that's quite a hike as a week or 2 ago 2 pints was 64p.

    Hi there - great topic...

Just wanted to pick up on what Cheerfulness was saying...

    I started doing Dbelles challenge...feeding me n hubby on £60 - well 80 euros for 4 weeks..
Anyway, i really do believe that it has lead to a healthier diet for both of us.. i have always cooked mainly from scratch, but now im using more sensible portions, and getting the ratio between , protein, carbs, veg etc... As a result i have lost 13lb in 4 weeks - with no real effort.... and as cheerfulness said... a lot of it is down to much simpler meals.... toad in the hole, chicken dinners, pork, veg and barley pie ,casseroles etc

MRSMCAWBER - I've been following that challenge with interest myself. I think you've probably said better what I meant which is that I've had to change some things (adding veg protein via pulses etc) to our diet and look at how much we were eating, and as a result I think we are getting healthier. We've had to cut out most sweet snacks, as the money need channeling into 'real' foods.
I'm starting to get flashbacks to my childhood, and all the foods my mum cooked us. With a few variations, we eat simple foods from back then. Actually quite enjoying the challenge... well for now.

I half heard on the news this morning that there is a crisis looming in the banking system. Something to do with banks starting to refuse to lend to other banks. The Bank of England is saying that it is not sure if it will bale out banks in trouble as most of the problem is the reckless lending they have been doing.

Just a five minute browse on DFW threads give an indication of just how much people have been able to borrow in relation to their income.

I do know in France their credit cards have to be paid each month and it is nothing like so easy to borrow money. Though last time I was there I did see a lot of 'buy now and pay in X months' advertised in shops.

Who is to blame the people who borrow or the people who lend is irrelevant, the situation exists. This is inevitably going to affect us all.

Who pays? Not the banks and their shareholders, very often not the borrowers, but always the rest of us.

  • I have to admit, I'm beginning to panic, my utility bills & council tax went up at the beginning of the year, by about 25%, my wages went up less than 2%.
Mortgages are now rising again because of the sub prime & with food prices going up it's turning into a nightmare. Hubby has worked for a few weeks, but has nothing else now for a few months. I have a lodger, but only short term. I have some money saved, but it won't go far, we treated ourselves to a night away last weekend, but I'm now beginning to wish we hadn't, it cost £40 and it's the only holiday we've had this year, but maybe we should have saved that money too.
I've cut my milk order down by half & I water it down. I make my own bread, I shop at the local butcher as he is cheaper than Tesco. I don't buy organic food, but I'm planning on growing some of my own veg next year. But I do worry how much more I can cut down by.
Once all the regular payment go out we're left with £93 a month this has to cover everything else. Most months it is only my ebay/amazon sales that keep us afloat, but once I've finished decluttering there will be no more from that source.

Are you claiming any benefits you may be entitled too?

You sound so busy already, but could you offer maybe ironing services if you have a couple hours spare each week? You could advertise free on Gumtree and charge around £7-£8+ ph.

  • Morning all

following this thread with great interest...

I think that in many ways, you need money to save it... lets see if i can explain that :p ...

If i had a weekly grocery budget of say £15 and i know people who do... they end up spending that on enough food to last that 7 days... so if items are on promotion, they don't have the spare income to take full advantage..
when i was in the UK i was always "stockpiling" when promotions came on - but was only able to do so as i had "spare cash", buying 6 sleeves of canned tuna etc was no problem - and obviously it meant that my overall food costs were reduced.... as i was getting each unit cheaper....my friend couldn't afford to spend £3.00 on tuna -because it would take up to much of thats weeks money:confused:

Once you get started doing this it has a knock on effect.... I'm doing it now... when i shopped this week, all the meat i got was pork - as that was the best offer in that supermarket.. but i knew that i had chicken in (from my shopping 2 weeks ago, and beef last week)... and so it will go on... but if your budget doesnt stretch to doing it that way it ends up costing more... which seems so unfair...

    CHEERFULNESS

You are so right.... cooking good old fashioned meals seems to be the way that people are gonna have to go... i feel for those who havent got those kind of recipes off of family etc.... A lot of those meals i do are what mum used to cook - and still does sometimes...
I have been here 6 weeks, and in that time i have had a curly wurly and a couple of jaffa cakes... and that was in the first 2 weeks :D ... i wanted to lose weight anyway, but i have found that by eating proper good old, toad in the hole, savoury meat roll etc im feeling so much more satisfied than eating lots of fancy cooking.. i have no desire/craving for chocolate, chips etc.... it really is incredible... and the size of meals we now have - i would have laughed at not so long ago :rotfl: and as a result im losing weight without any real effort.... not to mention the money im saving - by not "eating" it...

So i really do think that, if prices continue to rise - everyone is going to have to revert to that way of eating...
I think the OS board is gonna get more and more busy, as people start realising that it is the only way to go....
