I want to stop drowning

  • Hi

    Where do I start
I had a joint bank account 13yrs ago with my ex husband. I have not had any dealings with this account since. However an agency started chasing me for the joint overdraft we had. I explained to them that it was joint and gave them my ex husbands details address DOB etc. They said the bank only asked them to chase me. I find this disgusting considering at the time I was a single mum.
So I didn't speak to them again. The company was Shoosmiths.
Now bailiffs turned up yesterday at 6am to the property I use to live in asking for me. This is so scary and I don't know what to do. This as now been 13yrs.
I've learnt I could possible get a statue barred ? But I don't know where to start. Someone please help. I will be so grateful of any advise of where to go with this situation.

    Ali

Alicall. You would get more responses if you start your own thread on the DFW forum. Just click on the new thread button..

Debts which are statute barred means the creditor has run out of time to collect the debt but as the debt is joint your ex may have spoken to the debt collection agency or paid something. Bailiffs sounds like they have gone to court and got a court order. Have you received no correspondence or have you moved around a lot? Check the national debt line website re statute barred debts and I think there is a helpline you can ring.

It is important not to let bailiffs in or acknowledge the debt.

Alicall I hope you get the support you need.

Feeling a bit stressed at the min but nothing new there. This struggling with money is so stressful as well as the housing situation and on top of that a teenager who doesn't listen. Any advice on a teenager about to do her GCSEs who won't listen to a word you say?

Sorry you feeling stressed and the housing situation difficult at the moment. I do hope something comes up soon for you. Teenagers are difficult at the best of times I feel and she is probably stressed about exams and picking up on your anxiety too so try not to make it too confrontational as that wont help you or her. Hormones are rife at that age too. It is not an easy time for them either.

When you say she isn't listening do you mean you are telling her to revise and she isn't? Sometimes you have to accept I think that you cannot control all she does. She is two years off being an adult. Just offer support and help where you can and leave her to deal with the consequences of her actions. If she fails she will either have to retake or get a job or go to college. Does she know what she wants to do next?

If it is rudeness and backchat I found that par for the course with my two when they were stressed as teenagers but they grow out of it so I would ignore it as best as possible or enforce sanctions if really bad.

It's constant back chat plus I try and advise her what revision she should do and she just doesn't listen. I just said nicely to her that I think she needs to focus on maths and English more. She wants to stay at sixth form but after then no clue.

If she wants to stay at sixth form then she will need English and Maths passes. She must know this but with some the more you try and advise the more they shut down. Maybe back off for a bit and see if she does it on her own. Unfortunately you cannot make her study. How did she get on with her mocks?

Maybe ask if you can help her with testing her, write out a revision timetable etc etc.
