I'd provide for my family, including money in trust for the grandchildren.

I'd give £500,000 to the local children's hospice, £250,000 to the local adult hospice and spread £250,000 through animal charities.

I'd go an worldwide cruise with friends while I decided how to spend the rest of my money.

I wouldn't spend the money on flashy cars, designer clothes, shoes or handbags, that's for sure.

Still like made from scratch food, but would certainly eat out more. Travel more, and employ a housekeeper/cook(chef) to do it for me, maybe a secretary too. Share it round.

Though not sure it would make me happy, I think the Lottery winning should be capped at £1m and spread around more for the lower number.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • One other thing I remember about winning the lottery is not to use the money to start a business.

Most people would like to HAVE their own business, but RUNNING your own business is a completely different thing.

As the man said (a financial advisor, I think), "If you had what it takes to run your own business you would be doing it now. Winning the lottery will not give you the drive, determination and ambition to run a business. It will give you the money to buy the things you need to run a business, but not the personal attributes you need to run a business".

I guess what he meant was that running a business was hard work. If you didn't have the drive to do it before, you won't have the drive to do it once you have enough money to allow you to live a nice life without working.

Think about it, you said you would maybe start your own business because you think you never work again, and would have lots of babies.

Would you go into business with some who didn't think they could work again and planned on having lots of babies?

If you do win the lottery, keep two of your dreams but don't bother with the one.

PS. I wasn't putting you down, just pointing out to all that running a business is hard work and you need a lot of dedication and skills. If you do come into money don't start a business just because you have always dreamed of it.

no - what i meant was that i could never imagine not working again, i know its sad but i get board when i'm off work for longer than 2 weeks, so i would need something to keep me occupied and i know i would have finacial freedom ect but there is only so much shopping, holidays ect you can do. i would proberbly do this for the first year ect but then i'd need to do something else. but you are right in the fact that running your own bussiness takes someone with drive and ambition ect so maybe i will OWN my own bussiness and just pop in 1 or 2 days a week to help out ect in bettween nail and hair appointments and city breaks. i think i will need to up my 1 million that i originally said to a least 5 million now. the funny thing is i don't even do the lottery!!!!

I would still cook, but could afford all organic, free range, top quality, locally produced ingredients and products if I wanted them.

I would hire a cleaner and gardener because I don't enjoy either (but like a clean house and nice garden).

I'd still turn of lights and TVs etc as it's a habit for me (and a good one) and still recycle.

I'd probably still visit charity shops and use eBay, as I love getting a bargain, and enjoy out bidding other people but would probably just buy more! I also don't believe in buying new things if second hand is cheaper but still in as new/working order.

I would probably still give away stuff on freecycle as I hate throwing things away.

If I won the lottery I'd only buy a 3 bed house as I don't want to live in a mansion. So long as I had all the rooms I want then I wouldn't want 5 extra bedrooms!
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

That was pointed out to me, sorry, I miss read what you said.

Buying a viable business is a much better idea, it would allow you to swan in and play the big boss when it suited you, or swan out again when you fancied. That would suite me down to the ground :T

Everybody needs something to do, you'd go mad otherwise. I know some rich people try to live their lives just shopping and doing nothing, but they don't seem very happy to me.

since my original reply things have changed massively in my house. My husband had a stroke and is now on on benefits.

The money would mean he could come off benefits and if anything happened to me he would be able to get the extra help he needs, with out me worrying myself half stupid at the moment about the what if situation.

I could give up work and keep a closer eye on him. And we could donate both time and money to charities that help people suffering with the after effects of acquired brain injuries e.g strokes. As well helping people directly by helping to pay for practical things such as everyday aids, extra physio etc. As well help funding research in to better after care.

    Yours

  • ooo £5 million, i would

    1) pay off the debts the very moment the money was there

    2) OH would quit his job, probably spend a few years at home with me and DD then get into something he would enjoy

    3) go house hunting, get out of this flat, and find a nice 4/5 bed place

    4) pay off OH mums mortgage and debts, pay off my dads debts and buy him a house, and pay off anything my stepdad owes, buy him a house, and pay for him to go to a private hospital to sort out his back as the NHS arent that bothered

    5) get me and OH intensive driving courses, and get a couple of nice cars, nothing flashy, and certainly not brand new, just something nice

    6) get passports for me OH, and DD and go on our first family holiday, probably to disney world

    7) set up accounts for DD, my brother, sister, and my nephews which they wouldnt be able to acces until they were 25, with the understanding that i would also put them through uni if they wanted to go

8)have more babies, as i would know i was financially stable enough to have more, probably 5 more!

    9) continue to cook from scratch, but wave goodbye to Mr T's and hello to local producers

    10) just kick back, and relax, knowing i didnt have to worry about paying the bills, ahhhhhhhh

I agree, it would be tons better, but they won't do it. The lure of '£80 mil on Euromillions! Woohoo!' is what draws a lot of people in. (I don't normally do the Euro or the Lotto but if there is a massive rollover I will sometimes say 'what the hell...')

Actually just now if you had, say, 80 peeps winning a mil in a week and giving up their jobs, that'd be 80 jobs going begging for peeps who really need 'em. Maybe they should do it. (I'm aware not everyone could cover outgoings with interest on a mil, especially with current measly interest rates, but I could and I bet a lot of other OSers could manage it).

This is a really good thread. I would pay off our debts, Buy a lovely farm and rambling farmhouse. Put as much environmentally friendly stuff in as possible, make sure OH doesn't have to work. I would love to travel whilst the children still want to 'be' with us. I would really love to have my eyes lasered as I hate wearing glasses. Possibly have a cleaner!

I agree with Chika, that is a bit harsh, I'd need a housekeeper because I'd have a busier lifestyle and household chores would become less important to me. Also, you are giving a salary for this. I'd pay well for the type of job and the extra freedom it gives me.

It was a bit, hands up and apologies, peeps! I still wouldn't do it, though: I've done domestic cleaning myself and known others doing it. Not speaking for myself, but some cleaners really do enjoy having a right old nosey through your things (and will natter about it with their mates too...) Seriously! And while cleaning myself I've seen some hair-raising stuff inadvertently, without even having to look for it... Ew! (And had to hear stuff about my employers' personal lives that I would really rather not have known: it's amazing how peeps will natter on to a cleaner without any self-censorship. It's a good job I'm silent as the grave when it comes to indiscretions).

While you chatter on to your cleaner, that look of polite interest on her face as she gets busy with the Mr Muscle masks these thoughts: 'OMG! OMG! OMFG!!!! ROFL!!!!!!!'
