Ok well you got me and I think we all need to know what is under it now. Dead body, gold coins, hidden art work, drugs money, drugs, guns?
Well its better than bits of chopped up bodies, seriously though you have to find out now. It will most likely be nothing but surely you have to find out?Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -

Site for a sump pump. If/when the cellar floods or water seeps through the porus brick walls the sump is the lowest part of the cellar and its where you put the pump to pump out water................
That's my guess , I've seen dozens of them in cellars.I'm guessing the reason its got a top to it rather than being left open is because someone would break their ankle in the dark if it wasn't covered.......:D0 -
If thats a key hole there would be a lock behind it. Try poking something in there.0

Before you open it can you turn the light off, it's dark in here & I don't think I could handle a sudden bright light?Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

dominoman,
Are there any houses nearby that are of the same build design as yours?
If so, it might be worth popping around and having a word with the owners/residents to see if they have a similar thing in a cellar and if so, they may well have discovered what it was originally for.0 -
I have it on good authority there'll be iron ingots under there.
Open it using charged redstone.
Put your hands up.0 -
one of the best things about buying old houses is exploring the loft and outbuidings. Never found anything of any value so far....Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0
