I use the ASDA 24 hour pay at pump, usually in the early hours of the morning on the way to work so never have to queue or see anyone. Every couple of months stick a bottle of Redex in too.

What annoys me is when you go through the day and people won't use both sides of the pumps, they'll sit blocking the entrance because they all want a pump on the drivers side.

A pump on the drivers side? Or a pump on the side nearest to the filler cap, which may be either side depending on the vehicle? Not all stations have long reach hoses either.

My current and previous cars both run significantly better on vpower (or nitro+ or whatever its called now!).

You pays yer money and takes yer choice!

Important to differentiate between running on supermarket vs branded fuel and then on top of that standard vs premium fuel.

My current car has had higher mpg on Shell "Fuel Save Diesel" on every fill vs Sainsbury's "City Diesel" on every fill. However no difference on BP "Ultimate Diesel" which is super diesel except 9p a litre!

They all have hoses long enough to reach to either side of any normal car though - our current fleet are a Mondeo estate, a Pug 405 estate and an E34 5 series. None are exactly small and I've never yet found a pump that wouldn't reach from the "wrong" side if you can park sensibly!

I never said it was not possible. Just that not every station has "long reach hoses".
  • I've not read the replies in here but i'm sure this has been said....

I fuel up at Shell all the time & i refuse to fuel up at supermarkets.

My car runs fine on shell
I have a shell card which gives me money off every so often

I ran my car on supermarket fuel for a while many years ago & it ran like crap. Really sluggish. Switched to Shell & voila like magic it was fine again. No filters changed during that time that you could point at being a factor.

And laughing at people fuelling up at Shell when there's a cheaper supermarket just next door?

    Here's one....

What about all those people puffing away on their cancer sticks? To me that is a waste of money.
Getting bladdered every weekend. Not something i would spend my money doing.

    So on & so forth.

There's plenty of ways folk spend their money that i wouldn't bother doing, but then it's their money, not mine.

I am one of those "silly people" finding out that it was more economical and kinder to my engine, to "pay over the odds." I worked at it, I calculated the difference per tankfull.

There is always a reason for everything....

Not sure I was suggesting you'd said it was "impossible", but the fact that even the normal length hoses can reach either side of a normal length car does tend to support lee's post that you'd made the "long hose" comment in reply to.

People waiting for a pump on the "right side" do cause delays, especially when they end up blocking the entrance so people who know how big their cars are, and can park accurately, can't get in to the available pumps.

Fair comment, Robisere, although many have found virtually no difference - there have also been a number of rolling road studies that found no or negligible effect.

The thing is, there are so many variables across different cars, drivers and journeys that something that clearly did work in your case may not work in another.

Hence the very guarded statements by the fuel companies - they undoubtedly have studies that show a benefit in some cases or they couldn't make the advertising claims they do but all of those claims are heavily couched in "mights" and "mays" because in a lot of cases they simply won't hold up.

The only sensible conclusion is that people should try for themselves as you have. If it works for them then great, if it doesn't then spending the extra is pointless.

If they just accept the advertising claims and some gut-feeling impression of "smoother" etc without actually measuring it then they're likely wasting money :)

We've little choice with the 370Z if we want to run it as Nissan intended - it runs on 98RON fuel, - which none of the supermarkets here in NI do

I've got a 350Z and I buy all my super unleaded at Sainsburys - Sprucefield doesn't have super unleaded (at one of the busiest junctions in NI, I find that very surprising) but I can confirm that Forestside, Holywood Exchange, and Falls Road AT LEAST all do stock SU, generally 2p more expensive than their 95 RON. I think their super is 97 RON though...
    Can anyone add to this?

Even the markup for branded fuel can be reduced if you keep you eyes open -*** MONEY SAVING TIP : in my local area (Cambs / Beds border) the local papers carry coupons for BP garages - 3p off per litre. *** The local BP garage is 4p per litre dearer than the local Tesco, but is only 200 yds from home as opposed to a 7 mile round trip in a direction I don't often head. Guess where I fill up ?

I also record petrol consumption every time I fill up - the last time I was using petrol (from 2007 to 2012 - then a diesel car) got the following result (car was a Mitsubishi Galant 2ltr). The results were not too conclusive re Supermarket / Branded.

BP 30.2mpg (24 fill ups) home town
Tesco 27.78mpg (12 fill ups) home town
Morrisons 34.7mpg (13 fill ups) girlfriends town (Lincolnshire) - cheap petrol, just not always in the direction of travel.
Esso 35.3mpg (8 fill ups - so getting a little low as a statistical sample, and was very dear in comparison), half way between the two.

My diesel years (2012 - recently) however were a little kinder to Tesco, with BP averaging 40 mpg and Tesco 42.5 in a Skoda Octavia 2ltr
