Why is it the shell fuel stations very often sell the most expensive fuel.

It makes me laugh to see silly people in there paying over the odds when less than a mile away they can get fuel cheaper at Tesco or Sainsburys.

Why do people still go there?
Because they're not always the most expensive around. Haven't we already had a thread like this not so long ago. Why should it bother you where anyone else gets their fuel from?

Funny thing is if you look around you can often get Shell fuel for nearly the same price as Supermarket fuel.

The additive package is not the same as Supermarket fuel no matter what some may say.

If i have a decent car I will tend to use Shell, especially a DPF equipped diesel.

I have Tesco petrol in the Berlingo because it was convenient. I filled with Shell a couple of weeks ago.

My old mk3 Mondeo lacked power, smoked more and did less to the gallon on Supermarket fuel, the mate I sold it to didn't believe me, a couple of months later he did.

    Additives do make a difference.
Totally agree (wow, there's a turn up ;))

Up until very recently my local Shell was just as cheap as the local supermarkets, usually catered for the local taxi firms so you know it was cheap, and I found my car to run much better on their diesel. Occasionally I'd even fill up on their premium diesel.

Branded petrol stations typically just sell fuel and basic supplies. Supermarket petrol stations sell everything you could need for your weekly shop (and at extortionate prices).

Near us its the reverse - the local ASDA station is unmanned so no shop and the local tescos ones are both very small shops with no additional facilities whereas the BP and Shell ones have the likes of Subway, sandwich bars, Coffee bars, etc.

Because clearly someone has bugged him by going to Shell - probably a friend or relative doing better than him in life

premium brand fuels have cleaning agents and additives

Thats funny and probably a marketing con as it all comes from the same distributors
    You really have no clue.

    Well I did say "typically".......

There is an Esso on my way to work which is exactly as you describe and I won't go near that either, because despite there being 5 lanes of 2 pumps per lane (each doing diesel and unleaded), your queuing down the road and it takes forever because every other driver is dithering about doing their weekly shop or enjoying a cafe latte with doughnuts in the attached Costa coffee.

It had to happen eventually Neil. Lol.

I am not sure if the Berlingo runs any better on Shell petrol it only has 75hp so is pretty slow.

But I did brim the tank with Shell normal petrol and it gave 370miles till the fuel light came on.

I might brim it on Tesco stuff next month just out of interest.

... and parked at the pumps while doing so!

We've little choice with the 370Z if we want to run it as Nissan intended - it runs on 98RON fuel, - which none of the supermarkets here in NI do. In fact the highest rating here is 97RON, so we add an octaine booster to each fill.

I'm not terribly precious about where we get petrol in the C350 merc - it seems happy enough no matter what we give it.

I use the ASDA 24 hour pay at pump, usually in the early hours of the morning on the way to work so never have to queue or see anyone. Every couple of months stick a bottle of Redex in too.

What annoys me is when you go through the day and people won't use both sides of the pumps, they'll sit blocking the entrance because they all want a pump on the drivers side.

I actually filled up at Esso today, I always use Tesco as its round the corner but I found that Esso was the same price and they did Tesco club card so I will use them from now on- only taken 13 years to realise!
