Why is it the shell fuel stations very often sell the most expensive fuel.

It makes me laugh to see silly people in there paying over the odds when less than a mile away they can get fuel cheaper at Tesco or Sainsburys.

Why do people still go there?

    Convenience? Time saving? Low mileage?

Doesn't make them silly, some people just have different priorities. If I'm on a long journey and I need to top up, I will use the motorway services. I know full well that I am paying more for the fuel, but it is something I may only have to do a couple of times a year and I value the convenience and time more that the extra monetary cost.

As said it's about convenience and ur usage. Being in London, I fill. Up my car probably once every 3 weeks. So once a month or so if I pay £2/3 extra over sainsbury which is why miles away, I don't really mind....). Also if it's say 3 to 4 pence dearer over supermarket then it's hardly ridiculous price....

Funny thing is if you look around you can often get Shell fuel for nearly the same price as Supermarket fuel.

The additive package is not the same as Supermarket fuel no matter what some may say.

If i have a decent car I will tend to use Shell, especially a DPF equipped diesel.

I have Tesco petrol in the Berlingo because it was convenient. I filled with Shell a couple of weeks ago.

My old mk3 Mondeo lacked power, smoked more and did less to the gallon on Supermarket fuel, the mate I sold it to didn't believe me, a couple of months later he did.

    Additives do make a difference.

2p per litre (the typical "premium" charged round here by branded stations) comes to an extra £1.50 if I fill my Pug's tank from empty to brimming and, at 75 litres, that's quite a big tank.

That £1.50 is around 15 miles at current prices for that car so travelling more than 6.5 miles to save actually costs more, even if I'm filling an empty tank.

In practice I'm normally putting about £20 in (my rough weekly use), so the saving would be a pitiful 36 pence, or about 3.6 miles worth. So a 2 mile each way detour to save that 2p would be pointless.

Silly people? And you laugh at them, do you?

Maybe they simply know more than you do or have different requirements?

The premium brand fuels have cleaning agents and additives in them that the budget supermarket brands dont. That may or may not be important to an individual or to their car.

Probably less important on a petrol than a diesel but significant.

Or maybe, as has also been suggested, its more convenient / more cost effective not to travel a few miles further down the road?

Or what about the likes of BP and Shell tend to have better shops? Maybe some people have other stuff to get (my ASDA fuel station is unmanned)

Also some cars are optimised to run on higher rated RON fuel than supermarkets usually supply.

Oh and heres a tip - just because you dont have the ability to comprehend why other people may do things differently to you doesnt make them silly. ;)

Maybe a corporate vehicle and they have to use a Shell fuel card.

For me, my local supermarkets don't do super unleaded, so quite often I fill up with V-Power at my local shell filing station.

That maybe correct so the driver doesn't care about the cost as the poor employer will have to pay

Thats funny and probably a marketing con as it all comes from the same distributors

Branded petrol stations typically just sell fuel and basic supplies. Supermarket petrol stations sell everything you could need for your weekly shop (and at extortionate prices).

I fill up every 3 weeks at the branded petrol station just down the road, it's approximately 3 minutes of my life every 3 weeks.

In my case it's not more expensive than the supermarket fuel, but I'd pay happily more just to avoid having to sit their 20 minutes waiting for some idiot to finish their weekly shop or finish their coffee and doughnuts before returning to their car.

Plus a lot of idiots use supermarket petrol stations, why put my car at risk?

That is without even going into the debate about fuel quality, there is a difference is additives, there has to be because 95ron fuel has 5% bio-ethanol, but bio-ethanol cannot be mixed into the fuel before transport so this alone proves that additives are mixed in at the point of sale.
