Which of these three laptops would you select ?

No, however even that is not quite right. My s-in-l requested that in the run-up to them coming home for a short time, ideally if between us we could source a laptop for him and have it here for his arrival, it would save so much time. In the meantime, the lid of my acer aspire 9420 broke and I cannot close it now. When I try, the side opens up, as if something is located within a cog. The machine's operating system is vista, so with both those things in mind, it is at the back of my head that I will replace mine, even though I have ipad & iphone. I am quite sure in the umpteen posts, I could have mislead you, but either way, it makes no difference. He has since requested that not only do I open it, but test and review it.

As for the W10 upgrade, if it does arrive in time, I am really sitting on the fence over w10. So much has been written about it that has caused me to wonder if I or he would want 10.

Just in case he does and with limited time available, could someone try to explain in easy to understand terms how I would do this please?.

There are two answers to the question "what do I need it for?".

For myself, I need to replace my acer aspire 9420 vista ultimate which I use for general surfing, no downloading of films,music,video's. The lid has broken.

My son-in-law said that when he returns to the country for 10 days, he too will buy a new laptop and if mine is proving to be satisfactory, he will buy an identical model. However his use may be slightly different as he will use "word" or similar quite a lot and produce things like CV's to print off.

So clear that your laptop was to be first and he was to purchase if yours was any good.
Otherwise I don't know why you have purchased his so early.

Windows 10 might already be installed. If not;

Download and save this image now: Windows 10 English International 64 bit

Have an empty USB Flash drive on standby. 8GB minimum.

Yes, originally mine was to have been the first purchase but things moved swiftly and he made the decision and and he placed the order. It came as a surprise to me when the mesg arrived with the information.

oh my lord, how right you are. It may well be that this cogitating might result in the NEXT operating system being released before my mind is made up.

I have to reluctantly agree with my wife who says, "you don't move the laptop from your desk, so don't bother to close the lid, then even if the lid is broken, as long as it works........................."

and finally, the laptop arrived yesterday, unpacked carefully, examined for damage, but none apparent. Started up today, it installed everything including the free W10 (the free upgrade expires today), and now it is on charge.

Any regrets? yes, I wish I'd bought one as it looks and handles well.

You didn't even upgrade your laptop to Windows 7 when I gave you the opportunity. I had an idea that you would do nothing, when it came to the replacing of your machine.
