Miss sold laptop court advice

I can sell you a 20 year old Toshiba laptop that will edit your video. The CPU is supposed to be at 100% when its working hard.
Its not fast enough to play HD content but it will edit it.
Software settings issue or driver issue? What are you actually doing in the editing?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Okay, try using it on a desk or table, laptops really shouldn't be called laptops as they shouldn't really be used on your lap or any other soft material surface as it suffocates the vents and the system can't cool itself.
Do the three softwares crash every time you use them? If the technician that looked at it managed to edit video (although just webcam footage) it would suggest that it didn't crash when he tested it just that the CPU was running at maximum which is normal when gaming or editing.
Rather than testing it with drone footage if the files will be as big or bigger than the GoPro files try just recording some bits on the built in webcam and try editing them.
Also try going to lenovos website and manually downloading updated drivers, especially chipset and bios update as well as going to the geforce site to get the latest graphics driver.
The system was originally designed for Windows 8, there have been loads of issues with things not being 100% compatible after upgrading to Windows 10. The GeForce website doesn't actually recommend that graphics card to be run on higher than Windows 8.1 but have released drivers for Windows 10 but it may never be fully compatible. Although it would be nice if all of these things upgraded themselves automatically they don't and they do require a certain amount of work from the end user to manually download and install fixes to bugs caused by upgrading.0 -
bsod I will have to do this over the weekend but will let you know the results.
this is not something you will do, bsod is when a pc crashes to "Blue Screen Of Death"
Another thing i forgot is it could be a thermal cut off in some bios settings there is a safety temp setting that will cut in when a set temperature is reached, so maybe your cpu is getting a tad warm and the laptops safety switch is cutting in. Smart fan control. It maybe worth resetting the cpu with some artic silver thermal paste, i done this with my alienware a few years ago.
heres a couple of example piccys i googled.

I'd be quite happy to join all your clips for you and add the music if you get stuck, shout.
hope you get it sorted0 -

In this context bsod is the user who has given some advice in post 28 that OP is going to try and will post the results.
As the laptop is so new and it is a convertible type I wouldn't recommend opening it up to do anything with the thermal paste unless you know what you are doing. Its one thing opening up a desktop to do a bit of work inside if you are upgrading or for testing and relatively easy for anyone to do. Opening up a more complex unit with no knowledge of what you are doing is a disaster waiting to happen.
Just last week I had to explain to someone who had bought all components from me to build his own PC and didn't want to pay for me to build it for him why he won't be getting a refund on the CPU he fried by not using any thermal paste at all when assembling the PC and connected the fans up to the wrong ports on the motherboard and bent several pins trying to connect bits incorrectly and that neither the warranty nor consumer rights protect him from incorrect installation. That should have been a fairly simple build but he messed it up.0 -
I will suggest what I suggested previously get someone to look at your laptop. Just because PC World sent it to the workshop does not mean that it is faulty as some problems can be a fault and sometimes user error. For example overheating can be caused by a faulty part but also and commonly by fluff/dust/pet hair trapped in the fan.
However having said that I still think there might be a fault with the machine. At least if you take it to a reputable independent engineer then you can rule out a fault. Of course if there is a fault then request the engineer to write a report outlining the fault and then send this to PC World. They should at this point offer to repair it for you.0 -
Even though it is called a laptop, actually using it on your lap or placing it on something such as a sofa can cause problems as there are probably cooling vents on the bottom of the case.michael0fowler wrote: »No I always use my laptop on my lap or on my sofa. I don't think I have ever actually used it on a table and never on a cooling tray.
If these are even partially covered then the CPU can overheat fairly quickly and it doesn't take too much excess heat to permanently damage it and even if the vents were not blocked, hair and other debris from your lap or from the sofa could easily get sucked in by the fan.0 -
You could try a program like Speccy, to see if it is an overheating issue.
It will tell you the temps of your components as well as other potentially useful info.0 -
+1 for overheating issue. The spec of the machine is more than powerful enough to edit 1080p with its eyes closed, but that will make it run hot, especially with the current weather. 4K is far heavier lifting - it's like editing 4-and-a-bit HD videos at once. The footage is also MPEG encoded, which requires extra processor power, but a modern i5 should be in spec.0
