Miss sold laptop court advice

Hello, in November I bought a laptop from PC world to edit a holiday video I was going on in May. My current one was very sluggish which is why I decided to get it at the time. I was looking at a £300 laptop but on the advice of one of their members of staff bought one for £600 as the cheaper one would not be able to edit the video.

In may when I returned from holiday I found out the expensive laptop could not edit. It was sent off for repair but they said the laptop was simply not good enough. I contacted PC world who have refused to do anything about bit. They Have said they weren't there so don't know what was discussed with the salesman. They have stopped responding to my emails and are not willing to work with any ADRs .

I sent them a letter before action which they also ignored. I felt I had no option but to issue a court claim. They also did not respond for 10 days but today have just issued a acknowledgment of service which gives them another 14 days and they state they dispute the whole case.

I just wanted some advice really about what happens next and how they can dispute this even though they started to ignore all my other communication with them.

Thanks

What is the reason why it won't edit? "Not good enough" is not a technical explanation - if you haven't been given one then ask for one. There may be solutions that will be more cost effective than risking a contested court case.

all laptops can edit video, the original one, the £300 one, or the £600 one

Hi didnt want to go into too much detail as the message was already long. The repair guy said it hasn't got enough memory and even if I upgraded the memory to 16gb the processor would still struggle as he edited a simple webcam video and the processor was maxed out doing this.

Basically your word against the member of staff who supposedly said xyz .

Could not edit as in why/ what is going wrong .
I have edited video with 1GB memory and a 600ghz CPU so i don't think we are seeing the full picture .

I had my partner there but obviously she is not the most impartial person however was there throughout the convocation. It'd not my word against the member of staff as when I asked for them to speak to him they ignored my request.

When I say it cant edit I mean it either freezes or crashes every minute or so on and not save the work. I have tried 3 separate programmes with the same result. Gopro studios, windows movie maker and adobe premier and this happens on all 3. I have even factory reset computer and this still happens.

I would suggest getting someone independent to look at the laptop. If it is completely freezing as in nothing is moving on screen then it vould be faulty RAM. Of course you would need this confirming and it could be another hardware fault possibly motherboard or overheating.

Overheating can often be caused by dust stuck in vents/fans so it may not be an actual fault with the laptop.

If it is just crashing and not in fact freezing then this would point towards software as the problem.

Have you tried describing the problem on the techie board as you might be able to narrow down what is causing the issue?

retailers aren't responsible for corrupt data or bugs in third party software, all these people had similar problems, they are unlikely to all have had faulty machines

    try your old laptop

a £600 laptop should have at least 8-12GB of ram, an i5 or i7 processor, and maybe an ssd, a machine of that spec is should be relatively nippy, how nippy depends exactly on what you are throwing at it.

A processor running at 99-100% whilst doing something cpu intensive is normal, you can tell it to run at 80% if you prefer, but it will take longer.

    Hi, thabks for your reply.
I'm not blaming PC world for any bugs or corrupt software. But if I got another computer and ran the software perfectly fine on that one surely its the laptop?! If anyone could point me in the direction of any other video editing software i could give a try. But surely there is a point where you have to stop blaiming the different software and look at the common demominator (the laptop.)Further to this their own repair technician said the laptop was not capable of doing this.

I'm not a computer expert but I feel completely ripped off that it doesn't do the specific task I bought it for dispute paying so much for. I also feel really let down by there lack or willingness to help

did you ask him/her why the machine is not capable, and what machine (in their opinion) would be capable? the job title technician is given to people of varying talents

what did you spend £600 on, and what are you trying to edit.

if every other program works on this machine, that points to your task, your data, or your software, rather than hardware

have you tried it on another machine?
