Which laptop is it and what's the spec?
And what kind of video are you trying to edit?

It takes a lot fewer resources to edit a 5-minute video taken on a mobile phone than to edit a 2-hour 4K video taken with a professional camera. How specific were you with the salesman? If you just asked for a laptop that can edit video with no further detail you're going to struggle to demonstrate misselling.

I've not tried it on another machine as this is the only one I have. And yeah the guy said it didn't have enough memory and the processor wasn't good enough.

The laptop is a lenovo yoga 500 running windows 10. The processor is an Intel i5 2.20 GHz and has 8gb of ram installed. Its also a 64 bit operating system.

I'm just trying to edit video shot from my go pro. No more than 1 hours worth of raw footage max. Just from a family holiday.

I was very specific with the salesman. I said I had a gopro 3 and he told me what one he hadm we then had a long discussion about go pros. I also mentioned I'd like to get a drone in the future to incorporate some of the shots from that in the video.

There's no reason really for that spec to not cope with video editing, I have used much lower spec machines to do it. I'm not too familiar with the different models of GoPro, is yours one of the 4K ones? That's the only thing I could see that the laptop wouldn't be up to.

The only other thing I could think of causing the issue (apart from the software already discussed) is an overheating issue, editing video can push machines to very high temperatures and laptops can be difficult to keep cool compared to desktops. Do you use it on your lap or on a table/desk ensuring all vents and fans have a clear air flow? Have you tried a cooling tray with it?

The biggest mistake you made is expecting any of the staff at PC World to know anything about the equipment they sell other than the profit margin.
  • rendering video can cause alot of heat build up, 8gb of ram is not great and the video card in it probably only has 2gb of mem sayin that you should still be able to edit/render video just alot slower than perhaps other laptops or macbooks. What settings did you record in on the gopro 4k?

why was it sent for repair? saying its not good enough to edit is not really a valid claim all laptops can edit some fast some slow some pain stakingly slower than slow.

as others have already asked, was the footage recorded in 4k? if so that could be the problem. 4k technology really requires a powerful computer and most wont be up to scratch. If you record in 2.7k or even better 1080p you should be able to edit fine based on that spec you listed....

I edit a lot on a mac from my gopro hero 3, and generlly stick with 1080p. the quality is still top notch.

So you want to reject it as not fit for purpose after 6 months... Highly unlikely a court would agree you haven't 'accepted' the goods.

What date did you buy it and what date in May did you contact them? As it also looks likely you have passed the 6 month mark which means the burden of proof is on you - so what proof do you have that the machines inherently fault?

This doesn't look anywhere near to being clear cut to me. You will probably loose this as well as all the fees you've paid pursuing it.
You better hope they don't ask the court to award them travel expenses as well.

Your only hope by the sounds of it is they don't appear or respond in time and you get default judgement.
  • I've edited video on an xp machine with a crappy Celeron and 2gb ram. I currently edit a lot on an HP Compaq with 4gb ram.

There's probably a hardware problem. Make sure your hd is set for DMA in device manager and sometimes this setting is also found in the bios. If you recorded on 4K use a converter to convert the footage to AVI, there's plenty of free ones out there.

If it still persists take it to an independent pc workshop and let them investigate to further your court action if that's the way you're going.

The software progs are not the problem. I use Vegas Movie Maker which I've found to be the best one for my use after trying most of them over the past 10 years.

    Good luck.

The footage I've tried to edit is just 1080.
I can only assume it was sent for repair as they believe it should have been able to do this task with out crashing or freezing. I will try Vegas thanks for the advice. When I try opening go pro studios which is what I'm trying to edit in it takes 4 minutes for it to open before freezing and then crashing. Surely this isn't normal.

@arcon5 6 months is relitively new for a laptop and I would expect it to work the same after a factory reset as the day a bought it so I don't see your point. As stated this was when I went on holiday and tried to edit for the first time. The fact it is 6 months old does not magically make it fit for purpose as made known. You ask for burden of proof about it being faulty.l? I don't ever remember saying it was faulty.

Further to this I never said it was clear cut, just came on here for advice as they weren't responding to any of my emails or letters. I'd be interested in why you have such strong opinions that I will loose my case though?

How does your laptop live up to the minimum and recommended specs for go pro studio?
