The ask mid site also has an option to pay £4 to obtain third party details following an accident. This will give you his insurer details, policy number and contact number. Give them a call and report it for him. You can claim the £4 back from his insurers.

Avoid the £4 by using a smartphone to reach askmid.
  • I've had quote to repair the car and most said they would write the car off but one garage said it could be done for around £650 so I got in contact with the person and they said they can only afford £600 so I could have that and keep the car because if I went through the insurance I wouldn't get that if the cars written off. I've now told them I want the £650 but they have told me they have more money so can I sleep on it and let them know in the morning. Now I don't think I will except money as i've found out someone is fixing his car. So should I message them again tonight and say If I don't hear anything by tomorrow morning I'm going through my insurance.
  • That cannot be used to check someone elses vehicle without breaching the Data Protection Act 1998. The domain name should tell you it is for checking YOUR OWN VEHICLE ONLY.

Oh really? Exactly what personal information is that site giving out, and which of the DPA principles would it breach to do so?

Pretty sure my vehicle's registration is in the public domain, and its insurance status doesn't in any way compromise my personal identification.

As far as I can tell, and drawing on my 10+ years experience as nominated data controller for large organisations including NHS providers, the DPA warning on that site holds no weight at all.

Personally, I'd get on the phone to your insurance and claim via then. If insure state rite-off then so be it.

Mummy and Daddy are playing you for a fool. It cost £700 they would say they only had £650 and so on. Get it written off, and look for a new one, the only want to try and avoid going via insurance as they pretty sons's insurance they pay for will go up

Yes I've been made a fool as I just checked the cars details online and they have put a mot on the car and taxed it. Now I don't know if it's to late to report it to the police and the insurance.

Not too late to make an insurance claim.

(But why do you want to report this to the police? If an incident needs reporting to the police then it should be done ASAP and within 24 hours)

I was going to ask for their advice as I've never had this happen before.
  • Yes you can claim your insurance from your insurance company or you can opt for car loans
  • To me they was biding time to get their car sorted so if I go through the insurance it looks like their car was never in an accident and they had mot and tax.
