Urgently seeking some advice...

I'm a disabled person in a vulnerable situation. I've received a notice to move out of my flat by this Friday (a section 21 notice). This really scared me because at the time I was too ill to work, living off savings (that are now completely depleted) and had nowhere to move to. My landlord simply decided he doesn't want to rent the flat anymore. In the 2 months notice given to me in the section 21 I've managed to find both a new job and a new flat. I start my new job on Monday 18th July and I am due to move into my new flat this Friday. I've paid the reservation fee, passed the credit checks and reference checks.

However, although I've tried everything, I just haven't managed to scrape together the full amount required for my deposit. I've got the one month rent in advance, I can afford the monthly rent moving forward.

I've tried everything: I've asked my bank for an overdraft (turned down), approached a new bank to see if they'd give an overdraft limit (no they won't), tried normal loan, payday loan, pawned off anything I can, asked the local council if they have anything in place to help in this situation. Everything's been a no.

I really don't know what to do. And now I've made myself ill again with the worry and I'm considering suicide. The only barrier between me and having a secure new disabled friendly home is that deposit. How do I get blood out of a stone?

Where else can I try?

I am so sorry you are in this awful situation. Do you have any friends or family you could ask? Maybe speak to your new landlord and appeal to their better nature? Maybe if you put something in writing that you will pay back the deposit when your rent is due they might agree?
  • thanks for replying. I should have mentioned that I don't have family and my friends I do have aren't in a position to help. The landlord just said I can move in as soon as I've paid ALL the deposit that's due.

Ok well first I can not pretend to know how you are feeling right now but I do know about having dark thoughts. ( for want of a better word ). So 1st things first you need to take a step back and a big deep breath. Nothing is going to get sorted by you making yourself ill again.

Silly question but have you asked the old landlord if it is possible to extend? Just one month perhaps two?

Have you spoken to the new land lord and explained the situation. Perhaps they would allow you to over pay a small amount per month until the deposit is paid?

What ever happens you will need to do something and this will be a lot easier if you are well so please please go speak to your doctor.

You don't have to leave on Friday so you aren't going to be homeless.

If you are in a position to sofa surf for a week or 2, then your current deposit 'should' be returned by then and you will therefore have the whole amount.

Should = assuming you leave the flat as you received it less wear and tear
  • How much of a shortfall in cash are you talking about?
  • my current landlord says I can't extend my stay. However I don't think they can physically put me out on Friday. Friday just represents the expiry of the section 21 notice. I am sure they would need to possibly apply to court to physically get me out. It would be a shame for it to come to that. I would say I have about one week from Friday leeway during which time the current landlord won't physically be able to put me out yet and the new landlord will wait that time. So I must come up with the cash within that time period. Today my two best ideas were suicide or having sex for money. I realise I am not in a reasonable frame of mind at the moment so I'm going to call the Samaritans

Do you have a deposit to come back from the place you are currently living? Perhaps tell your current landlord that you'll move out on Friday if you get your deposit back then.

Exactly how much short are you?

  • We're looking at £500. It probably doesn't sound like an amount to get so upset about to some of you, but to me it is the difference between having a safe home and being essentially homeless.

I feel helpless and like I've failed at life. Really low.
