Really? Would you think it was worth having extra money for three or four years while you're sitting in a prison cell?
What they are doing is absolutely worth being reported for and being sent to prison for.

I will not defraud the taxpayer and I expect those that do to be severely punished, and no easy ride because they have dependent children either.

And I completely agree with you.

Not read all the posts but I have 'grassed' on someone for benefit fraud before and they were rightly investigated and had had their benefits reduced.

It was a similar situation to OP where someone had a live in partner.

People who cheat the benefits system will always be among the lowest of the low for me.

Our welfare system is already being stripped from the top down for the people who really need the help, how on earth could someone have such a complete lack of morality to take from a pot meant to help those in need?

Because I believe in the welfare system, I would report someone who's defrauding it.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I personally couldn't care less about people earning a few quid on the side, no matter how they earn it. Benefits are small enough as it is. Have never reported anyone even when I've seen it going on, although don't know anyone doing it atm, nor for a number of years.

I'm old now and I smile to myself when I hear self righteous people holding forth about benefit fraud but have no qualms about exaggerating an insurance claim.

It's often not just "earning a few quid on the side" though is it? I think a poster said this person must have had over £20,000 already that they are not entitled to. How many other people are there cheating the system for just "a few quid" as you put it?

I have reported someone for benefit fraud and no, I have never exaggerated an insurance claim.

I seem to know a few people who cheat the benefit system so there must be a pretty large number across the country.

I have only ever reported one though. That was partly because I was positive I knew all the facts and, to me, the person concerned was taking the ****. They were claiming that they could not work because of a bad back but were buying large items of furniture and managing on their own to get the bulky and usually fairly heavy items into their car or even up on to the roof rack! They were then selling them on.

They were doing so well at this that they bought a holiday home in Portugal and would go for holidays at least 4 times a year. They also had 2 vehicles, one for the transporting of furniture and a really nice open top sports car.

The thing that made me decide to report them was when they went to Australia twice in one year, one of the times for 6 weeks!

It turned out that they had got away with a pretty large sum of money. Originally it looked as though a prison sentence was for definite but then they were diagnosed with cancer and that was changed. They had to sell their house (large house worth quite a lot of money) and their car. I think they also sold their holiday home.

That paid the bulk of it but they are still paying so much back each month. They now live in a small 1 bed flat

I'm just going throw this out there. My ex sister-in-law was rightly claiming benefits after the breakdown of her marriage (brother in law had affair and walked out). She has a son who is disabled but few know that. Someone reported her, we believe we know who, it was in part vindictive and in part because they were sure of the facts. At least one of her benefits was stopped entirely pending an investigation. She was vindicated and able to prove that no fraud had taken place, with the help of a solicitor and her MP it was cleared up within a month, but without that money.

Now I'm not sure which benefits they stop when they begin investigations but they do stop some. Make absolutely sure you know the facts.

    Thank you all

The facts that I know are:

2 adults living together with 2 children

    She does not work
    He does

She claims as a single person
He does not claim any benefits

    I agree.
Almost all of the replies have been pro reporting.

The OP hasn't commented on how the replies have affected his/her opinion on whether to report.
