Loft coversion asked to be paid by bacs

OP posted with a concern. The vast majority of replies have tried to offer genuine help. A minority of idiots did get involved but fortunately OP did not follow the advise coming from that direction.
My posts are aimed at helping OP. I fail to see how I can help further by phoning the mobile number you quote. Of course, if this number was genuine, courteous and helpful, it would be accompanied by a name. Predictably with this loft company no name has been given.
Would I learn anything by phoning the number? My intuition is no I would not. You might learn something, so I invite you to phone it and report back to the forum with your findings. This would show that you are a sincere poster, who wishes to help fellow consumers.
As I though you're another keyboard warrior.0 -

I don't know many people who could fund a build on their credit cards. And if they can, I also expect them to be liquid enough to fund it without them. It makes no sense, therefore, for me to provide credit card facility for people.
Fair enough, you know about section 75. On the flipside, if I need to accommodate people who need to use credit, I'm looking for a different client.
People don't seem to be able to grasp that builders are alredy extending them a line of credit. The trust is mutual, not one way.
That's rubbish, builders won't do a thing without money upfront, and from there after the punter is behind the collateral
They simply are not extending them a line of credit, if they did this section of the forum would be be largely repugnant.,IE my builder did not do as promised
after 1 paid him xyz
But I wish to add the silver surfer seems a little disturbed, you are on your own with himI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

An interesting view but not one I share. I have demolished a property then put another in its place. Not one contractor asked for money in advance.
It comes down to negotiation, trust, honesty and reputation.
In principle a contractor will get materials on credit - this is the role of a builders merchant. If timed well then payment will not be made for two months, thus allowing the valuation from the consumer to fund these items.
Labour is where the more immediate money is required. But one does not pay for labour upfront.
The ones who are brilliant at the financing are the major house builders. Materials bulk purchased, in ex works loads thus avoiding the usual builders merchants cut. Delay payment for as long as possible and sub contract as much as possible then pay in 90 days or more. Basically the aim is for the new home buyer to fund the building process.0 -

But this statement, be it an insult or a complement, says a lot about your psyche. I will gain nothing by phoning the number. Indeed, I probably know as much, or perhaps more, about roofs as the loft company in question.
You have avoided answering the point I made. Will you be phoning the number, or are you too some sort of keyboard warrior?0 -

Different builders do different things and this board is never going to be over run with people starting threads saying how happy they are with the work done. Those people don't need advice.
I cannot be talking rubbish when
a) it's my job, my experience and contracts like JCT are built around payment based on valuations of complete work
b) that the advice always given on this board is to avoid paying up front as cowboys ask up front
c) that even the OP wasn't asked for money until the job was done
It would be nice for people to pay beforehand but the reputable builders generally have to extend a hand of goodwill because the ones who basically can't afford to run their business ask for money up front.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Not only a fascinating thread and an object lesson to those of us who plan major work in future, but also very useful in now knowing which forum regulars are posting sensible polite advice, and which are more deluded.
You know who you are.
I would name names but have to go and make a coffee.0 -

When I had some building work done, I didn't pay a penny until the builder had done a week's work, as per the staged payment agreement we had.0 -
An interesting thread and let's hope the OP updates us once it's sorted, although given the company are clearly involved we may need to read further posts with a pinch of salt...
For the record, I've paid people half upfront and half on completion, or paid for supplies or something but never the full amount until the job is complete.0 -
