In answer to the OP though, your best bet is to trap the cats and then take them to the rspca or similar,

This is genius; does it matter if I take them to an RSPCA branch in another county?

I won't tolerate cats in my garden...happily squirt whatever i feel like on them. If you can't deal with cleaning up your messy cat then find it a new home and get a pet you're capable of controlling.

It'll probably be seen as theft.

Why not a just a litter tray within their house... I'll tell you why, they hate the smell of cat muck, and would rather it was deposited elsewhere... anywhere, so long as it's away from the little children crawling around the floor.

This might be true of some but not all. We always have a litter tray down and I wish my cat would use it, but she only does so if it's pouring down outside. Unfortunately you just can't make a cat with outdoor access only "go" where you want it to, be it an indoor litter tray or a corner of your garden. It really bothers me that I don't know where she does her business and she might be causing a nuisance to someone - I can totally understand why people find it so offensive. If I did know where she was going, I would absolutely go and clean it up, every time.

No doubt people will say the cat should be kept indoors, but it's just not an option for this cat. She was a stray before we took her in and goes stir crazy if she can't get out when she wants to. In an ideal world, we'd move somewhere with no nearby houses so she couldn't cause a nuisance, but that's not affordable at the moment. Next time, we will try to get a cat that can adapt to life as an indoor only cat to avoid this problem.

No doubt the cat haters will still think I'm an irresponsible pet owner for letting the cat outdoors, but trust me, we don't all think it's fine for our cats to be doing their business in someone else's garden.

Doesn't stop you letting it though.

It doesn't, because there is no other option apart from getting rid of the cat, which is part of our family. I appreciate that cat haters won't understand that, and there's nothing I can say to change that.

By the way, she may not actually be fouling in people's gardens, there are fields around which she could be using, but I have no way of knowing, and I wish I did.
